An Estimation Engineer for an interior design company evaluates project blueprints to calculate the exact costs of materials, labor, and overhead. They draft detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQ) and collaborate closely with designers, vendors, and project managers to prepare competitive bids, maintain budgets, and optimize profitability.
Core Responsibilities
- Quantity Take-Offs: Analyze architectural and interior drawings to accurately calculate material requirements (e.g., plywood, laminates, glass, and hardware).
- BOQ Preparation: Create and manage precise Bills of Quantities and cost estimates for residential and commercial fit-out projects.
- Vendor & Supplier Coordination: Source and compare quotations from vendors, evaluate current market rates, and negotiate pricing to reduce costs.
- Tendering & Bidding: Prepare and submit technical and commercial proposals for prospective clients.
- Value Engineering: Identify alternative, cost-saving solutions without compromising the aesthetic and functional quality of the design.
- Budget Tracking: Monitor project expenses from concept to completion, handling billing for extra items or non-BOQ requests.
- Site Verification: Conduct site visits for exact measurements and collaborate with project execution teams.
Essential Skills
- Technical Software: Proficiency in AutoCAD and advanced MS Excel is mandatory. Familiarity with 3D software (like SketchUp) or ERP systems is highly desired.
- Material Knowledge: In-depth understanding of interior materials, joinery, furniture components, and finishes.
- Analytical Thinking: Strong mathematical abilities to break down costs and forecast project feasibility.
- Communication & Negotiation: Ability to clearly explain budgets to stakeholders and negotiate fair rates with subcontr
