A VMC (Vertical Machining Center) or HMC (Horizontal Machining Center) Setter-cum-Operator is responsible for both setting up CNC machines and operating them to produce parts according to engineering specifications.
Roles and Responsibilities1. Machine Setup
- Read and understand engineering drawings, process sheets, and work instructions.
- Select and install the correct cutting tools, holders, fixtures, and workpieces.
- Set work offsets and tool offsets accurately.
- Load CNC programs into the machine.
- Perform machine setup for new jobs and changeovers.
2. Machine Operation
- Operate VMC/HMC machines safely and efficiently.
- Run trial parts and make necessary offset adjustments.
- Monitor machining operations to ensure smooth production.
- Load and unload raw materials and finished components.
3. Quality Inspection
- Measure machined parts using instruments such as:
- Vernier caliper
- Micrometer
- Bore gauge
- Height gauge
- Dial indicator
- Ensure components meet drawing dimensions and tolerances.
- Record inspection results as required.
4. Tool Management
- Monitor tool wear and tool life.
- Replace worn or broken cutting tools.
- Maintain correct tool data in the CNC control.
5. Process Optimization
- Adjust feeds, speeds, and offsets to improve machining quality and productivity.
- Minimize cycle time while maintaining quality.
- Report recurring machining issues to supervisors or programmers.
6. Preventive Maintenance
- Perform daily machine cleaning and lubrication.
- Check coolant levels and lubrication systems.
- Report machine abnormalities or breakdowns promptly.
7. Safety
- Follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE.
- Keep the work area clean and organized (5S).
- Handle tools and materials safely.
8. Documentation
- Complete production reports and machine logbooks.
- Record tool changes and machine downtime.
- Follow production schedules and standard operating procedures.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of CNC machining principles.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T basics.
- Understanding of G-code and M-code fundamentals.
- Familiarity with VMC/HMC controls (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Haas).
- Proficiency in precision measuring instruments.
- Basic troubleshooting of machining and tooling issues.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
Typical Qualifications
- ITI/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Machinist, Turner, or CNC Programming.
- 2–5 years of experience operating and setting VMC/HMC machines (varies by role).
- Knowledge of quality systems, safety standards, and 5S practices.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Production output achieved.
- First-pass quality and rejection rate.
- Machine utilization and uptime.
- Cycle time adherence.
- Tool consumption and tool life.
- Setup/changeover time.
- Compliance with safety and quality standards.
This role combines the technical responsibilities of a machine setter (preparing the machine for production) with those of a machine operator (running production efficiently while maintaining quality and safety).
