1. Role Overview
The Freelance EHS Consultant – Fire & Safety will support CorpSustain Ventures on project-based assignments involving EHS audits, fire and life-safety assessments, EHS compliance reviews, EHS due diligence, and ESG assessments. The consultant will independently conduct field visits, facility inspections, documentation reviews, identify EHS and fire-safety gaps, assess risks, recommend corrective actions, and prepare high-quality technical reports.
The ideal candidate should have strong practical knowledge of Indian EHS and fire-safety requirements, hands-on experience with industrial and infrastructure facilities, and a sound understanding of international environmental and social frameworks, including IFC Performance Standards and World Bank Group EHS Guidelines.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. EHS, Fire & Safety Audits and Site Assessments
· Conduct EHS, fire and safety audits for industrial, infrastructure, renewable energy, manufacturing, and operational facilities.
· Undertake EHS and fire-safety compliance assessments against applicable Indian regulatory requirements and international standards.
· Conduct field inspections, site walkthroughs, worker interviews, and reviews of EHS management systems and documentation.
· Assess fire prevention and protection systems, emergency preparedness, evacuation arrangements, fire-fighting equipment, alarms, detection systems, and emergency response procedures.
· Evaluate occupational health and safety practices, hazardous material handling, contractor safety, work-permit systems, incident management, and emergency response.
· Identify EHS risks, fire and life-safety deficiencies, unsafe conditions, non-compliances, and opportunities for improvement.
B. EHS Due Diligence and ESG Support
· Support Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) assignments from an EHS and fire-safety perspective.
· Review projects and operational facilities against IFC Performance Standards and applicable World Bank Group EHS Guidelines.
· Assess environmental, occupational health and safety, fire, and emergency risks associated with construction and operational activities.
· Identify corrective actions, mitigation measures, and compliance improvement recommendations.
· Support ESG and lender compliance assessments where required.
C. Technical Report Writing and Documentation
· Prepare EHS audit reports, fire and safety assessment reports, EHS due diligence reports, compliance assessment reports, and corrective action plans.
· Document audit observations, risk findings, regulatory gaps, fire-safety deficiencies, and recommendations clearly and professionally.
· Develop audit checklists, risk matrices, compliance trackers, and corrective-action monitoring tools where required.
· Ensure timely submission of accurate, high-quality deliverables aligned with client and lender expectations.
D. Coordination and Client Interaction
· Coordinate with project teams, facility representatives, contractors, and clients during planning and execution of assignments.
· Participate in client meetings, technical discussions, site debriefings, and closing meetings.
· Provide technical EHS and fire-safety inputs to internal ESG teams.
· Represent CorpSustain professionally during site engagements and maintain clear communication with project stakeholders.
3. Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Industrial Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Fire & Safety, or a related discipline.
· Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience in EHS audits, fire & safety, industrial safety, EHS compliance, or ESG consulting.
· Strong practical exposure to industrial / infrastructure site assessments and audit reporting.
· Experience working as an independent consultant or on freelance/project-based assignments will be preferred.
4. Required Technical Skills & Competencies
· Strong experience in EHS, fire and safety audits and compliance assessments.
· Proven ability to prepare professional EHS/fire-safety audit reports and corrective action plans.
· Good understanding of IFC Performance Standards and World Bank Group EHS Guidelines.
· Good knowledge of Indian environmental, occupational health, safety, fire and statutory compliance requirements.
· Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies, incident investigation, emergency preparedness, fire protection systems, hazardous materials, and contractor safety management.
· Ability to assess fire prevention, detection, suppression, emergency evacuation, and response arrangements.
5. Professional Skills
· Strong analytical, observational, and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to independently manage site assignments and deliverables with limited supervision.
· Strong stakeholder coordination and client-facing capabilities.
· Willingness to travel extensively across India for audits and site visits.
· Ability to work within defined timelines and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
6. Preferred Experience & Certifications
· Experience in renewable energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, chemicals, petrochemicals, oil & gas, or other high-risk industrial sectors.
· Exposure to lender-funded projects and international ESG/EHS requirements.
· Experience supporting ESIA, ESDD, sustainability, or lender compliance assignments.
· Certifications in Fire & Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, NEBOSH, IOSH, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, Lead Auditor, or equivalent qualifications will be an added advantage.
7. Engagement Expectations
· The consultant will be engaged on an assignment or project basis depending on project requirements.
· Travel to project sites across India may be required.
· The consultant should be capable of independently conducting EHS/fire-safety audits and preparing technical reports with limited supervision.
· Availability should be flexible based on project schedules, site requirements, and agreed timelines.

9. Ideal Candidate Profile
A technically strong and field-oriented EHS / Fire & Safety professional who can independently assess industrial and project facilities, identify material EHS and fire-safety risks, evaluate compliance, provide practical corrective recommendations, and deliver clear, client-ready technical reports within agreed timelines.
