This is a customer-facing leadership role working directly with UK-based engineering and stakeholder teams for a large SaaS payments platform hosted on AWS.

Role Purpose
The Lead Performance Engineer will be responsible for establishing and leading a performance engineering capability within our Client’s organization.
The role will involve designing and implementing performance testing frameworks, developing and executing test harnesses, analysing performance results and providing recommendations for optimisation across a complex SaaS platform.
This is not a traditional testing role. The individual will be expected to lead performance engineering activities from framework design through to execution, analysis and stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead the design and implementation of the performance engineering framework.
· Establish performance engineering standards, approaches and best practices.
· Design, develop and maintain performance test harnesses using JMeter (Java based).
· Define and oversee performance testing strategies across the platform.
· Execute performance, load, stress and scalability testing activities where required.
· Analyse performance results and identify application, infrastructure and architectural bottlenecks.
· Produce clear recommendations and improvement plans based on test outcomes.
· Coordinate and mentor the wider Performance Engineering team.
· Support planning, estimation and prioritisation activities.
· Proactively identify risks, dependencies and delivery challenges.
· Work closely with all stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into practical engineering solutions.
· Communicate progress, risks and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Essential Technical Skills
Candidates proposed for this role must demonstrate:
· Extensive Java development expertise.
· Proven experience designing and implementing performance engineering frameworks from the ground up.
· Strong understanding of performance, load, stress and scalability testing methodologies.
· Experience building and maintaining performance test harnesses and automated execution frameworks.
· Experience analysing performance bottlenecks and optimisation opportunities.
· Strong understanding of API-based and distributed architectures.
· Experience working within AWS-hosted environments.
· Ability to interpret performance data and provide practical recommendations.
Desirable Technical Skills
- Experience within payments, fintech, retail or eCommerce environments.
- Experience with SaaS platforms.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tooling.
- Experience supporting high-volume transaction processing platforms.
