STAFF NURSE – CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION LABORATORY (CATH LAB)

Rane Hospital is seeking a qualified and experienced Cath Lab Staff Nurse to join its Cardiology and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory team.
The selected candidate will be responsible for providing specialised nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures and ensuring safe, efficient and NABH-compliant Cath Lab operations.
QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCEEssential Qualification
- B.Sc. Nursing from a recognised institution.
- Valid registration with the applicable State Nursing Council.
- Minimum 3 years of nursing experience.
- At least 1 year of experience in ICU, CCU or Cardiac Care is preferred.
Preferred Experience
Candidates with experience in any of the following will be given preference:
- Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory
- Cardiac ICU / CCU
- Interventional Cardiology
- Coronary Care
- Cardiac OT
- Emergency and Critical Care
BLS certification is essential. ACLS certification will be preferred. Cath Lab teams are expected to be trained and prepared for acute cardiac emergencies and resuscitation.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES1. Pre-Procedure Patient Care
The Cath Lab Nurse will be responsible for:
- Preparing patients for coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty and other cardiac interventions.
- Performing a focused nursing and cardiovascular assessment.
- Checking vital signs and reviewing relevant investigations before the procedure.
- Ensuring appropriate IV access and patient preparation.
- Verifying patient identity, procedure details, allergies and other required safety checks.
- Ensuring informed consent has been completed as per hospital policy.
- Preparing and maintaining the procedural access site as directed by the treating cardiologist.
- Providing appropriate explanation and emotional support to patients and relatives.
Pre-procedure responsibilities commonly include cardiovascular assessment, review of medications and allergies, verification of consent, IV access and relevant laboratory investigations.
2. Assistance During Cath Lab Procedures
- Assist the Cardiologist during diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.
- Assist during procedures such as:
- Coronary Angiography (CAG)
- Coronary Angioplasty / PTCA
- Pacemaker procedures
- Temporary pacemaker insertion
- Other cardiac and vascular interventions performed at the hospital
- Prepare the Cath Lab, equipment, instruments and required consumables before each procedure.
- Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Assist the procedural team as a circulating and/or scrub nurse, according to training and competency.
- Ensure all necessary equipment and emergency supplies are readily available.
- Assist with contrast administration and other activities strictly within the nurse's authorised scope of practice and hospital protocols.
Cath Lab nurses require familiarity with sterile techniques, cardiovascular procedures, vascular instrumentation and the safe handling of procedural equipment.
3. Patient Monitoring During Procedures
- Continuously monitor the patient's:
- ECG and cardiac rhythm
- Heart rate
- Blood pressure
- Oxygen saturation
- Level of consciousness
- Pain and general clinical condition
- Identify and immediately communicate any abnormal findings or deterioration to the Cardiologist.
- Assist in monitoring patients receiving sedation as per hospital policy and competency requirements.
- Maintain accurate intra-procedure nursing and patient-monitoring records.
A nurse assigned primarily to patient monitoring should remain focused on observing the patient's clinical status and be prepared to respond to acute deterioration.
4. Emergency & Resuscitation Responsibilities
- Recognise and respond promptly to cardiac emergencies.
- Assist in the management of:
- Cardiac arrest
- Arrhythmias
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- Respiratory distress
- Other procedure-related complications
- Participate in BLS and ACLS protocols as applicable.
- Ensure the crash cart, defibrillator, emergency drugs and emergency equipment are checked and ready for immediate use.
- Participate in emergency drills and Cath Lab mock drills.
5. Post-Procedure Patient Care
- Receive and monitor patients following Cath Lab procedures.
- Monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythm and overall clinical condition.
- Assess vascular access sites for:
- Bleeding
- Haematoma
- Swelling
- Pain
- Other complications
- Monitor peripheral circulation and report abnormalities immediately.
- Ensure proper post-procedure handover to the ICU, ward or recovery area.
- Educate patients and relatives regarding post-procedure precautions and care.
6. Medication Management
- Safely administer medications as prescribed by the treating doctor.
- Maintain knowledge of commonly used cardiovascular and emergency medications.
- Exercise particular caution while handling:
- Anticoagulants
- Antiplatelet medications
- Inotropes
- Emergency cardiac medications
- Follow all medication safety protocols and accurately document medication administration.
7. Radiation Safety
- Follow all applicable radiation safety protocols while working inside the Cath Lab.
- Correctly use prescribed radiation-protective equipment.
- Follow hospital protocols regarding personal protective equipment and radiation exposure monitoring.
- Ensure patient and staff safety during fluoroscopy-based procedures.
Radiation protection is an important component of Cath Lab practice and staff are expected to understand and follow local radiation-safety procedures.
8. Equipment & Cath Lab Readiness
- Ensure the Cath Lab is prepared before the start of each procedure.
- Check the availability and readiness of essential equipment and emergency equipment.
- Ensure required consumables and procedural supplies are available.
- Report equipment malfunction or shortages immediately.
- Assist in maintaining an organised, safe and efficient Cath Lab environment.
9. Infection Control, NABH & Patient Safety
- Strictly adhere to NABH standards, hospital policies and SOPs.
- Follow infection prevention and control protocols at all times.
- Maintain aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Follow hand hygiene and PPE requirements.
- Participate in incident reporting and patient-safety initiatives.
- Ensure accurate and complete documentation.
- Respect patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality and rights.
10. Documentation & Communication
- Maintain complete and accurate nursing documentation.
- Document patient assessments, monitoring, medications and nursing interventions.
- Ensure all records are properly dated, timed and authenticated.
- Provide clear and structured handover between departments and shifts.
- Coordinate effectively with Cardiologists, RMOs, ICU staff, ward nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

CORE EXPECTATIONThe Cath Lab Nurse will be expected to independently contribute to the safe and efficient functioning of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. The nurse must demonstrate strong clinical vigilance, be competent in cardiac patient monitoring and emergency response, maintain strict aseptic and radiation-safety practices, and provide comprehensive patient care before, during and after cardiac procedures.
