Production Engineer in the fabrication industry drives shop-floor efficiency. They plan, optimize, and oversee the manufacturing of metal components. Responsibilities include interpreting technical drawings, managing fabrication and welding processes, ensuring strict quality control, and enforcing safety standards. [1, 2]Role Overview
- Position: Production / Fabrication Engineer
- Industry: Heavy Engineering, Steel Fabrication, or Manufacturing
- Reports To: Production Manager / Plant Head
- Core Objective: Maximize manufacturing output, reduce material waste, minimize downtime, and ensure fabricated products meet exact client and industry standards. [1, 2]
Key Responsibilities1. Production Planning & Execution
- Create detailed daily, weekly, and monthly fabrication schedules.
- Coordinate the sequencing of operations such as cutting, bending, machining, and welding.
- Allocate manpower and machinery effectively to meet production targets.
- Ensure the smooth flow of raw materials (plates, pipes, beams) to the shop floor to prevent bottlenecks. [1, 2]
2. Technical & Process Operations
- Interpret complex fabrication drawings, Bill of Materials (BOMs), and welding symbols.
- Standardize fabrication procedures and implement lean manufacturing techniques to improve efficiency.
- Oversee welding processes (e.g., MIG/GMAW, TIG/GTAW, FCAW) and troubleshoot welding-related defects.
- Ensure CNC machines, cutting equipment, and presses operate at optimal parameters. [1, 2, 3]
3. Quality Assurance & Control (QC)
- Conduct regular in-process and final inspections of fabricated assemblies.
- Implement NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) methods and dimensional checks per project specifications.
- Address quality deviations and implement root cause analyses (RCA) to prevent recurrence. [1, 2, 3, 4]
4. Equipment Maintenance
- Schedule and oversee preventative and predictive maintenance of fabrication machinery to minimize equipment downtime.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams for immediate troubleshooting of equipment failures.
5. Safety & Compliance
- Enforce strict shop floor safety regulations (e.g., PPE usage, safe lifting, hot work permits).
- Maintain 5S and housekeeping standards on the production floor. [1, 2]
