About the Role
We operate a quarrying and crusher business in Madurai with an own fleet of heavy vehicles — tippers, trucks, and quarry equipment. We are building an in-house workshop to handle all vehicle servicing and maintenance internally.
We are looking for an experienced Transport & Workshop Manager who can take full ownership of our fleet — from daily dispatch and driver management to preventive maintenance schedules and workshop operations. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires both operational discipline and technical knowledge of heavy vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Operations & Dispatch
- Plan and manage daily vehicle dispatch — right truck, right route, right time
- Monitor vehicle movement, trip logs, and turnaround times for all fleet vehicles
- Coordinate with quarry operations and billing teams on lorry allocation and load scheduling
- Maintain accurate vehicle-wise trip records — trips per day, tonnage carried, fuel consumed
- Ensure all vehicles have valid fitness certificates, permits, insurance, and pollution clearance
Driver Management
- Hire, onboard, and manage a team of drivers and helpers
- Enforce driving discipline — route adherence, load limits, speed norms, and behaviour
- Maintain driver attendance, overtime, and incentive records
- Conduct regular safety briefings and defensive driving awareness sessions
Workshop & Maintenance
- Run the in-house workshop — manage mechanics, tools, spare parts inventory, and work orders
- Design and implement preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles
- Oversee all repair work — engine, transmission, tyres, hydraulics, and electrical
- Manage spare parts procurement — vendor sourcing, price negotiation, stock control
- Track vehicle-wise maintenance history and repair costs
- Minimise vehicle downtime — ensure maximum fleet availability at all times
Cost & Compliance
- Track and control fuel consumption — vehicle-wise fuel log, mileage monitoring
- Monthly transport cost report — fuel, maintenance, tyres, driver cost per trip/tonne
- Ensure full compliance with Motor Vehicles Act, pollution norms, and RTO regulations
- Maintain all statutory documents — RC, insurance, fitness, permits for every vehicle
Reporting
- Daily fleet status report to management
- Weekly maintenance and cost summary
- Monthly fleet performance MIS — availability, utilisation, cost per trip
Requirements
Must Have:
- 7–12 years of experience in transport and fleet management — heavy vehicles essential
- Hands-on workshop management experience — must understand vehicle mechanics
- Strong knowledge of tipper trucks, mining/quarry vehicles, and heavy equipment maintenance
- Experience managing a team of drivers and workshop mechanics
- RTO compliance knowledge — permits, fitness certificates, insurance, Motor Vehicles Act
- Fuel management and vehicle cost tracking experience
- Tamil fluency; basic English for documentation
Nice to Have:
- Diploma or ITI in Automobile / Mechanical Engineering
- Prior experience in a quarry, mining, or construction materials company
- Familiarity with GPS vehicle tracking systems
- Spare parts procurement and vendor management experience
Pay: ₹13,802.85 - ₹25,000.00 per month
