Job Purpose
The Shift Engineer / Shift In-charge will be responsible for the smooth and safe operation of all engineering and facility systems during the assigned shift. The role involves supervising technicians, monitoring equipment performance, handling breakdowns, ensuring preventive maintenance, maintaining statutory and safety requirements, and coordinating with internal departments and external agencies.
Key ResponsibilitiesShift Operations
- Supervise and manage day-to-day engineering operations during the assigned shift.
- Monitor all critical engineering and utility equipment and ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Conduct regular rounds and check equipment operating parameters.
- Ensure proper shift handover and communicate pending activities, breakdowns, and critical observations.
- Respond promptly to equipment alarms, failures, and emergency situations.
Maintenance
- Plan, supervise, and execute preventive and breakdown maintenance activities.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, utility, and other facility-related equipment as applicable.
- Ensure equipment is restored safely and within the required turnaround time.
- Identify recurring equipment failures and initiate Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Ensure availability and proper use of tools, spares, and maintenance resources.
- Coordinate with OEMs and external agencies for specialized maintenance activities.
Team Management
- Allocate daily work to technicians/operators based on priority and skill level.
- Monitor team performance and ensure timely completion of assigned jobs.
- Guide and train technicians on equipment operation, maintenance, and safety procedures.
- Maintain discipline and ensure adequate manpower coverage during the shift.
- Support the team during critical breakdowns and emergency situations.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all site safety policies and procedures.
- Strictly implement LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) before maintenance activities.
- Ensure appropriate PPE and work permits are used.
- Conduct or participate in toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses immediately.
- Ensure maintenance activities are performed in accordance with SOPs and approved procedures.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain shift logbooks, equipment readings, breakdown reports, and maintenance records.
- Prepare daily shift reports and communicate critical issues to management.
- Ensure proper documentation of preventive and corrective maintenance.
- Track pending jobs and ensure timely closure.
- Maintain records related to energy consumption, utilities, equipment performance, and breakdowns as applicable.
Coordination
- Coordinate with Production, Operations, Security, EHS, Administration, and other departments.
- Coordinate with contractors and vendors for maintenance and service activities.
- Communicate equipment status and operational issues effectively to the reporting manager.
- Support audits, inspections, statutory requirements, and client visits as required.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical, Mechanical, HVAC, or related Engineering discipline.
- Relevant technical certifications will be an added advantage.
Experience
- 3–7 years of relevant experience in engineering maintenance, facility management, plant maintenance, utilities, or a similar environment.
- Experience in handling technicians/operators and managing shift operations is preferred.

- Basic understanding of HVAC and utility systems.
- Knowledge of LOTO, PPE, work permits, and safety practices.

- Ability to work under pressure and handle emergency situations.
- Good communication and reporting skills.
- Computer knowledge, including MS Excel and maintenance reporting systems.
- Ability to work in rotational shifts.

Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate should be a technically strong and safety-conscious engineering professional with good leadership skills and the ability to independently manage shift operations. The candidate should be capable of taking quick decisions during breakdowns and emergencies while ensuring that safety, quality, and operational requirements are not compromised.
