VEDANSH SUPERSPECIALITY HOSPITAL & HEART CENTRE JOB DESCRIPTION – STAFF NURSE (LABOUR ROOM)
1. Position Details
Position: Staff Nurse – Labour Room
Department: Labour Room / Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Location: Vedansh Superspeciality Hospital & Heart Centre, Dadri, Greater Noida
Reporting To: Nursing In-Charge / Nursing Superintendent
Employment Type: Full-Time
Experience: A fresher can be considered; experience in the labor room/obstetrics & gynecology will be preferred.
2. Job Purpose
To provide safe, compassionate, and quality nursing care to antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal patients; assist doctors during normal and complicated deliveries; and ensure proper monitoring and documentation throughout the labor process.
3. Key Responsibilities
- Assess and monitor patients admitted to the labor room.
- Monitor vital signs, fetal heart rate, contractions, and labor progress as per hospital protocols.
- Prepare patients for normal delivery, operative procedures, and emergency interventions.
- Assist obstetricians and other doctors during normal deliveries, assisted deliveries, and emergency procedures.
- Maintain aseptic technique and follow infection prevention and control practices.
- Prepare and maintain labor room equipment, instruments, and emergency supplies.
- Assist in preparation and maintenance of delivery trays and sterile sets.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and injections as prescribed by the treating doctor.
- Monitor patients during labor and immediately report any abnormal findings or deterioration.
- Provide immediate care and monitoring to mothers after delivery.
- Assist with newborn care and initial neonatal assessment, including coordination with the pediatric/neonatal team when required.
- Maintain accurate and timely nursing records, labor charts, medication records, and patient documentation.
- Ensure proper identification and documentation of mother and newborn.
- Follow all hospital policies, nursing protocols, and patient-safety standards.
- Maintain cleanliness, sterilization, and proper functioning of labor room equipment.
- Check emergency drugs, crash carts, and essential equipment regularly and report shortages immediately.
- Coordinate with doctors, OT, NICU, laboratory, blood bank, and other departments whenever required.
- Provide counseling and emotional support to patients and attendants regarding procedures and care.
- Ensure proper handover to the incoming shift nurse.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and professional conduct.
- Participate in quality improvement, audits, training, and hospital safety activities.
4. Emergency Responsibilities
- Respond promptly to obstetric emergencies.
- Assist the medical team during emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, fetal distress, and other obstetric complications.
- Ensure emergency equipment, drugs, and supplies are readily available.
- Follow emergency protocols and escalate critical conditions immediately.
5. Infection Control & Safety
- Follow hand hygiene and standard precautions at all times.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique during procedures.
- Ensure proper segregation and disposal of biomedical waste.
- Follow sterilization and disinfection protocols.
- Report needle-stick injuries, infections, incidents, and other safety concerns as per hospital policy.
6. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain complete nursing documentation and patient records.
- Record vital signs, fetal monitoring, medication administration and nursing interventions accurately.
- Maintain delivery-related registers and records as applicable.
- Provide proper shift-to-shift handover.
- Report incidents, complications, and significant changes in patient condition to the concerned doctor and nursing in-charge.
7. Qualifications
- GNM / B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid nursing registration with the applicable state nursing council.
- Basic knowledge of labor room procedures and maternal-newborn care.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
8. Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of obstetric and emergency nursing.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Good clinical observation and decision-making skills.
- Teamwork and coordination with doctors and other healthcare professionals.
- Compassionate and patient-centered approach.
- Willingness to work in rotational shifts, including night duties.
