- Instrument Management: Prepares and arranges surgical instruments, sutures, and supplies.
- Intra-operative Assistance: Passes instruments, sponges, and other tools to the surgeon as needed during the operation.
- Safety & Counts: Maintains strict counts of needles, sponges, and instruments before, during, and after the surgery to prevent items from being left inside the patient.
- Sterility Maintenance:Ensures all equipment remains sterile and prevents cross-contamination in the operating field.
- 2. The Circulating Nurse (Non-Sterile Role)The circulating nurse manages the broader environment of the operating room. [1, 2]
- Patient Advocacy: Verifies patient identity, surgical consent forms, and the correct surgical site prior to the procedure.
3. Additional Responsibilities
- Pre-operative Prep: Prepares the OT room by sterilizing equipment and checking that all life-support machines and lights function properly.
- Post-operative Care: Assists in moving the patient to the recovery room and ensuring all drainage tubes and dressings are secure
- Team Coordination: Assists the scrub nurse and surgical team by retrieving additional sterile supplies and handling medical waste.
- Monitoring: Assists the anesthetist and monitors the patient's vitals and overall condition.
- Documentation: Maintains comprehensive medical records, documents the supplies used, and properly labels and handles tissue specimens for the laboratory. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
