Senior Mechanic / Fleet Maintenance Technician
Reporting To
Transport Manager / Operations Head
Purpose of Role
To ensure all company vehicles and machinery are maintained in running condition with minimum breakdowns, reduced downtime, proper preventive maintenance, and controlled repair costs.
This is not just a “repair mechanic” role.
You need a person who behaves like an internal fleet reliability manager.
Key Responsibilities1. Preventive Maintenance
- Create and follow preventive maintenance schedules for:
- Lorries
- Tippers
- Forklifts
- Poclains
- Loaders
- Boom lifts/cranes
- Daily inspection of critical machines
- Monitor:
- Engine oil
- Hydraulic oil
- Coolant
- Greasing
- Brake condition
- Tyres
- Battery health
- Electrical systems
- Ensure services happen on time based on:
- KM reading
- Engine hours
- Usage condition
2. Breakdown Handling
- Attend breakdowns immediately
- Diagnose root causes instead of temporary fixes
- Coordinate with operators/drivers during field breakdowns
- Reduce repeat failures
This point matters heavily.
Many mechanics survive by repeatedly fixing the same problem.
You want someone who eliminates recurring issues.
3. Workshop Management
- Maintain workshop cleanliness and discipline
- Ensure tools are organized and not lost
- Maintain spare parts rack/system
- Track usage of:
- Oils
- Filters
- Bearings
- Hydraulic hoses
- Consumables
4. Vehicle & Equipment Health Tracking
Maintain records for:
- Service history
- Breakdown history
- Tyre replacement
- Battery replacement
- Major repairs
- Engine overhaul history
- Hydraulic failures
- Welding/fabrication work
Should update ERP or maintenance register daily.
