Job Summary
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples from patients for laboratory testing, transfusions, research, or donations. The role includes proper patient identification, sample handling, maintaining hygiene and safety standards, and ensuring patient comfort during the collection process.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect blood samples from patients using venipuncture and capillary techniques.
- Verify patient identity and test requisition details before sample collection.
- Label and handle specimens accurately to avoid errors or contamination.
- Prepare patients for blood collection and explain procedures clearly.
- Maintain patient comfort and manage anxious or sensitive patients professionally.
- Ensure proper storage and transportation of collected samples to the laboratory.
- Follow infection control, sterilization, and biomedical waste disposal protocols.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the phlebotomy area.
- Record patient information and sample details accurately in laboratory systems.
- Monitor stock of collection tubes, needles, gloves, and other consumables.
- Follow hospital policies, safety guidelines, and quality standards.
- Assist during health camps, home collections, and emergency sample collections when required.
Required Qualifications
- Certification/Diploma in Phlebotomy, DMLT, or related healthcare qualification.
- Prior experience in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory preferred.
- Knowledge of sample collection and handling procedures.
Skills Required
- Good venipuncture and blood collection skills.
- Strong communication and patient handling abilities.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in labeling/documentation.
- Knowledge of infection control and safety procedures.
- Basic computer knowledge for laboratory data entry.
Working Conditions
- Rotational shifts, weekends, and emergency duty may be required.
- Exposure to blood samples and biological materials.
- Strict adherence to hygiene and safety protocols is mandatory.
