Modular Hydrogen Production Facilities | Contract / Remote
1. Position Overview
The BoP & GA Design Engineer will develop and coordinate the consolidated Balance of Plant and General Arrangement Design Package for modular PEM hydrogen-production facilities in North America.
The role combines definition of the plant’s supporting systems with development of the overall physical arrangement. The engineer will coordinate process packages, utilities, electrical and control systems, compression, storage, safety systems and site interfaces into a practical, constructible plant layout.
The engineer will work remotely with an international engineering team. Deliverables will be reviewed and approved by the designated North American professional engineer and project engineering lead.
2. Key ResponsibilitiesBalance of Plant Definition
- Define the complete BoP scope and system boundaries.
- Identify required utilities, auxiliary equipment and infrastructure.
- Develop battery limits and interface points between vendor packages and site systems.
- Coordinate water treatment, cooling, drainage, instrument air, nitrogen, ventilation, electrical distribution, controls, fire and gas, compression and storage systems.
- Prepare equipment, utility-load and interface schedules.
- Identify package exclusions, scope gaps, assumptions and outstanding vendor information.
- Coordinate BoP requirements across process, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, controls, civil and structural disciplines.
General Arrangement Development
- Develop overall site and plant GA drawings.
- Position electrolyzer packages, purification systems, compressors, storage, cooling systems, electrical equipment and auxiliary systems.
- Establish equipment spacing, access routes and maintenance clearances.
- Incorporate lifting, removal and replacement requirements.
- Define preliminary pipe-rack, utility and cable-routing corridors.
- Coordinate site access, truck movements, loading areas and emergency-response access.
- Incorporate hazardous-area boundaries, vent locations, ventilation requirements and fire-and-gas considerations.
- Allow for modular installation, construction sequencing and future expansion.
Design Coordination and Control
- Review PFDs, P&IDs, vendor drawings, equipment data sheets and site information.
- Maintain consistency between the BoP definition, equipment schedules and GA drawings.
- Coordinate and resolve multidisciplinary design interfaces.
- Develop and maintain assumptions, holds, interface and technical-query registers.
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, HAZOP actions and project coordination meetings.
- Incorporate approved comments and maintain revision-controlled deliverables.
- Ensure drawings and schedules comply with applicable North American codes, project standards and client requirements.
3. Principal Deliverable
The engineer will produce one coordinated:
Balance of Plant (BoP) and General Arrangement (GA) Design Package
The package will include:
- Overall site and plant GA drawing.
- BoP system and equipment definition.
- Equipment and package-layout drawings.
- Battery-limit and utility-interface schedule.
- Equipment and utility-load schedules.
- Access, lifting and maintenance-clearance requirements.
- Preliminary piping, utility and cable-routing corridors.
- Hazardous-area and safety-layout considerations.
- Assumptions, holds, interface and technical-query registers.
- Design coordination and constructability review record.
Individual drawings and schedules must retain their own document numbers and revision control within the consolidated package.
4. Required Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in mechanical, process, piping, plant-layout or multidisciplinary engineering.
- Demonstrated experience developing BoP scope and GA layouts for industrial facilities.
- Experience with hydrogen, industrial gas, chemical, energy or modular process plants is preferred.
- Strong understanding of packaged-equipment integration and multidisciplinary interfaces.
- Ability to interpret PFDs, P&IDs, equipment data sheets and vendor drawings.
- Knowledge of equipment spacing, maintenance access, hazardous areas and constructability.
- Familiarity with applicable North American engineering codes and standards.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or equivalent plant-layout software.
- Strong written and spoken English suitable for professional engineering coordination.
- Ability to personally develop technically complete deliverables with limited supervision.
5. Preferred Experience
- PEM electrolyzer and hydrogen-production facilities.
- Hydrogen purification, compression and storage systems.
- Containerized or skid-mounted process packages.
- Brownfield and greenfield site integration.
- 3D plant modelling using AutoCAD Plant 3D, Navisworks, Revit, SolidWorks or equivalent.
- Participation in HAZOP, model reviews and constructability reviews.
6. Role Boundaries
The BoP & GA Design Engineer is responsible for multidisciplinary layout integration and coordination. Detailed specialist calculations and final discipline approvals remain the responsibility of the applicable lead engineers and designated professional engineer.
The successful candidate must nevertheless identify design conflicts, incomplete inputs, safety concerns and interface gaps and formally record them for resolution.
