Introduction
We seek a talented, highly motivated Director to be a part of our India team. The candidate should be motivated to help the world’s premier companies understand India and its policy environment, find alignment with key stakeholders, and help India grow by considering the ideas and capabilities of top-tier firms in the market.
The candidate should bring deep familiarity with India's policy and regulatory landscape, combined with commercial acumen, communication, instincts, and relationships to navigate it effectively on behalf of clients, and the seniority and skills to lead both client engagements and high-level stakeholder relationships.
A keen understanding of India’s policy, political, and stakeholder environment and its global context, combined with the ability to navigate it on behalf of clients, is essential. Skills and responsibilities required are of a high degree of management and leadership.
Position Responsibilities
Client Services and Stakeholder Engagement
- Own and lead a portfolio of senior client mandates with a focus on India's policy and regulatory environment, taking full accountability for the quality, coherence, and impact of BGA's advice and engagement across all relevant scopes of work.
- Lead client advocacy at the highest levels, engaging senior government and regulatory officials, parliamentary leaders, industry bodies, media, civil society, and other stakeholders. Build durable relationships that translate into sustained client outcomes.
- Set the standard on quality and timeliness of all client deliverables including high-stakes briefings, strategic memos, engagement strategies, and policy analyses. Take final editorial responsibility for the relevant output.
- Develop an authoritative understanding of each client's priorities in India, the policy and regulatory challenges that affect their operations, and the longer-term landscape in which they are operating, enabling the team to advise proactively rather than reactively.
Business Development
- Support the Managing Director to drive the growth of the India practice by identifying and converting new client opportunities across priority sectors, build pipeline through BGA's network and the Director's own senior relationships
- Maintain and cultivate a high-level professional network spanning senior corporate, government affairs and C-suite executives, policy and regulatory officials, multilateral institutions, and thought leaders that generates consistent business development opportunities.
- Represent BGA India at premier industry events, policy forums, government consultations, and international conferences, actively projecting the firm's expertise, relationships, and standing as India's leading government affairs advisory practice.
- Maintain a strategic view of government policies, legislative and regulatory developments, sectoral trends, and investment flows, identifying emerging client opportunities and positioning BGA ahead of market movements.
Team Management and Thought Leadership
- Provide leadership and mentoring to the BGA India team members. Set goals and standards for team members. Evaluate organizational structure and capacity needs to optimize workload and resource allocation.
- Evaluate and develop the India practice's organisational structure, talent pipeline, and capacity model to ensure the team is resourced to meet the demands of a growing and increasingly complex client portfolio.
- Identify and champion opportunities to raise BGA's profile and thought leadership in India including through publications, speaking engagements, media commentary, and convening senior stakeholder dialogue to demonstrate market leadership and deepen BGA's relevance to government, industry, and civil society audiences.
- Work collaboratively with BGA regional and global teams across the Asia-Pacific and Africa to deliver integrated, multi-market mandates, contribute to firm-wide knowledge and capability, and advance BGA's strategic objectives.
Research, Writing and Delivery
- Frame, provide and solicit input and conduct final check for client deliverables, including stakeholder maps, engagement strategies, monthly monitoring matrices, etc.
- Support content and editing to research products, including news flashes, client memos, the BGA topical updates and half yearly Forecast etc.
- Guide the monitoring, analysis and reporting on key public policy issues, regulatory and legislative developments, and brief client executives on major developments.
- Keep abreast of news relevant to clients and provide top-line analysis of current events and how developments affect clients’ business operations and update on MS teams and other platforms.
- Provide senior-level analysis and briefings on significant policy, regulatory, and legislative developments as well as interpreting their implications for client businesses and equipping executives to engage confidently at the highest levels.
- Work with minimal guidance and supervision in high pressure environment with multiple work streams while meeting deadlines.
- Other duties as required.
Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 12 years in government affairs, public policy, or regulatory advisory experience or 15+ years in a senior industry role with direct policy exposure. Demonstrated experience managing teams and client relationships is strongly preferred.
- Expertise: Deep, current knowledge of India's policy and regulatory landscape across one or more priority sectors, including technology, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, energy, financial services, or advanced manufacturing.
- Communication: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to produce and oversee the production of clear, precise, and analytically rigorous written work under tight deadlines.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Proven ability to engage confidently and credibly with senior government officials, corporate executives, industry bodies, and media, including in high-stakes briefings and public forums.
- Commercial Instinct: Track record of generating and converting business development opportunities, and of deepening client relationships over time through consistently excellent delivery.
- Tools: Proficiency in MS 365 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams); familiarity with Salesforce or equivalent CRM is a plus. Comfort adopting new technology tools and platforms.
- Education: Minimum bachelor's degree in law, economics, political science, business, journalism, or a related field is required. A master's degree or equivalent professional qualification is an advantage.
