A welder is a skilled trades professional responsible for joining, cutting, and repairing metal parts and structures using high-heat equipment such as MIG, TIG, and arc welders. Key responsibilities include interpreting technical blueprints, preparing metal surfaces, operating welding machinery in various positions (flat, vertical, overhead), and inspecting finished products for quality, safety, and structural integrity. [1, 2, 3, 4]Core Responsibilities and Duties:
- Blueprint Interpretation: Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to plan layouts and ensure precise assembly.
- Welding Operations: Performing high-quality welding (MIG, TIG, Stick, Flux-cored) on various metals and alloys.
- Material Preparation: Cutting, grinding, and cleaning metal surfaces using saws, torches, and grinders to prepare them for welding.
- Quality Inspection: Assessing welded surfaces and structures for flaws, ensuring compliance with safety standards and project specifications.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting welding equipment and tools to keep them in working order.
- Safety Compliance: Adhering to strict safety protocols (OSHA/local regulations) and wearing appropriate PPE (masks, gloves).
- Fabrication & Assembly: Assembling, aligning, and fastening metal parts together, including pipes, beams, and vessels. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent, plus technical training or certification in welding.
- Certifications: Often requires certifications from AWS (American Welding Society) or similar bodies.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with metal fabrication, welding tools, and measurement tools.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy materials (often 50+ lbs), stamina to stand for long periods, and the ability to work in confined spaces or high positions.
- Manual Dexterity: Strong hand-eye coordination for precise, consistent work. [1, 2, 3]
