Responsibilities

Here are the key responsibilities for a Maintenance Engineer / Senior Engineer – DG Sets (Diesel Generator Sets) role:
Installation & Commissioning
- Carry out installation, testing, and commissioning of new DG sets at customer sites as per technical specifications.
- Conduct pre-commissioning checks — alignment, wiring, control panel integration, AMF/ATS panel setup.
- Perform load trial runs and validate DG set performance against rated specifications before handover.
- Coordinate with the sales/project team for site readiness and installation scheduling.
- Train customer's operations staff on basic DG set operation, safety, and troubleshooting during handover.
Core Maintenance Responsibilities
- Plan and execute preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance schedules for DG sets (all capacity ranges as applicable).
- Conduct routine inspections of DG sets, including engine, alternator, control panel, AMF panel, and auxiliary systems.
- Monitor and maintain critical parameters — oil pressure, coolant temperature, battery voltage, load factors, and running hours.
- Perform periodic servicing as per OEM guidelines (oil change, filter replacement, coolant top-up, belt/hose inspection).
- Troubleshoot and rectify mechanical, electrical, and control system faults in DG sets to minimize downtime.
- Carry out overhauling of engines/alternators as per running hours or OEM schedule (top overhaul, major overhaul).
Operational Responsibilities
- Ensure DG sets are available and ready for load (especially critical for data centers, hospitals, manufacturing plants where uptime is essential).
- Monitor fuel consumption, fuel quality, and maintain fuel stock/log records.
- Conduct load testing and synchronization checks (for sites with multiple DG sets running in parallel).
- Coordinate with control room/BMS team for automatic changeover (mains-to-DG) functioning of AMF/ATS panels.
- Ensure DG sets comply with statutory noise and emission norms (CPCB/pollution control board compliance).
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain maintenance logs, service history, breakdown reports, and spare parts consumption records.
- Prepare and update SOPs, checklists, and PM (preventive maintenance) schedules.
- Ensure statutory compliance — pollution control certificates, fire safety norms, electrical safety compliance for DG installations.
- Coordinate audits (internal/external, ISO, client audits) related to DG set operations and maintenance.
Vendor & Spares Management
- Coordinate with OEM/AMC vendors for scheduled services, warranty claims, and technical support.
- Manage spare parts inventory — critical spares stocking, reorder levels, and vendor coordination for procurement.
- Evaluate and negotiate AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) terms with service providers.
Team & Safety Responsibilities
- Supervise and guide technicians/junior engineers on daily maintenance activities (relevant for Senior Engineer level).
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols during maintenance — LOTO (Lockout-Tagout), PPE usage, fire safety near fuel storage.
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring failures and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Train junior technicians on DG set operations, safety, and troubleshooting.
Reporting & Coordination
- Prepare MIS reports on DG set uptime, downtime, fuel efficiency, and maintenance cost.
- Coordinate with facility/plant management on power backup planning during peak load or mains failure.
- Liaise with electrical/utility teams to ensure smooth integration of DG power with the main electrical distribution system.
