Key Responsibilities
1. Tooling & Die Design
· Design multi-stage forging dies, trim tools, and fixtures for orthopaedic implants (titanium, cobalt-chrome, and stainless steel).
· Create complex 3D surface models of implants, including parting lines, flash land channels, draft angles, and blend radii.
· Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure precise tooling manufacturing and alignment.
2. Process Simulation & Optimization
· Perform finite element analysis (FEA) using simulation software (e.g., DEFORM, QForm, ForgeNxT) to model metal flow, temperature distribution, and strain rates.
· Predict and eliminate forging defects such as folds, under-fills, piping, and excessive die wear prior to physical tooling launch.
· Optimize billet geometry, pre-form shapes, and heating parameters to maximize material yield and reduce scrap.3. Tooling Validation & Troubleshooting
· Collaborate with the forge shop floor to validate new tooling during initial press trials.
· Troubleshoot production issues related to premature die failure, heat checking, or dimensional variance.
· Establish and manage die life tracking systems to continuously improve tooling durability and performance.
4. Documentation & Compliance
· Generate detailed 2D engineering drawings and manufacturing documentation for CNC toolrooms.
· Maintain complete design history files (DHF) in compliance with ISO 13485 and FDA medical device quality regulations.
· Author technical reports detailing simulation findings, validation results, and engineering changes.
Qualifications & Requirements
· Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Metallurgical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering.
· Experience: 1 to 3 years of experience in hot/warm precision forging die design, with a strong preference for medical implant or high-precision aerospace components.
· Technical Skills:
o Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., NX, SolidWorks, Creo).
o Hands-on expertise with forging simulation software (specifically DEFORM-3D, QForm, or ForgeNxT).
o Strong knowledge of metallurgy, specifically the behaviour of titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) and Cobalt-Chromium alloys during hot deformation.
· Soft Skills: High attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and the ability to collaborate closely with production and tooling departments.
Preferred Qualifications
· Direct experience with tooling for screw presses, hydraulic presses, or mechanical forging hammers.
