Job Summary
The role involves retrofitting diesel vehicles with LNG cryogenic tanks and associated fuel systems. The engineer/fitter ensures safe installation, integration, and maintenance of LNG systems, enabling vehicles to operate efficiently on liquefied natural Gas.
Key Responsibilities
1. Vehicle Conversion & Installation
- Remove or adapt existing diesel fuel systems to accommodate LNG cryogenic tanks.
- Fit and install cryogenic tanks, piping, valves, and vaporizer units into vehicles.
- Ensure proper alignment, insulation, and secure mounting of LNG tanks.
2. Fabrication & Welding
- Perform TIG welding and precision fitting of stainless steel cryogenic components.
- Fabricate brackets, supports, and protective housings for LNG tanks.
- Follow AWS and international welding standards for cryogenic systems.
3. System Integration
- Connect LNG tanks to vehicle fuel lines, regulators, and injection systems.
- Integrate cryogenic systems with vehicle electronics and safety monitoring devices.
- Conduct calibration and functional testing of LNG fuel delivery systems.
4. Testing & Safety
- Carry out leak detection (helium leak testing, pressure testing).
- Verify compliance with cryogenic safety protocols and vehicle standards.
- Ensure adherence to local transport regulations and international codes.
5. Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform preventive maintenance on LNG tanks and associated systems.
- Diagnose and repair faults in cryogenic fittings, valves, and insulation.
- Maintain detailed records of conversions, inspections, and certifications.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 5–10 years in cryogenic systems, LNG vehicle retrofitting.
- Technical Skills: TIG welding, cryogenic fitting, system integration, pressure testing.
- Knowledge: LNG safety standards, vehicle fuel system design, thermodynamics basics.
- Soft Skills: Precision, problem-solving, adherence to safety culture.
Risks & Considerations
- Safety Hazards: LNG is stored at –162°C; improper handling can cause frostbite or tank failure.
- Regulatory Compliance: Must meet transport authority standards for LNG retrofitted vehicles.
- Operational Risks: Poor fitting or welding can lead to leaks, reduced efficiency, or accidents.
This role is essentially a hybrid of mechanical fitter and cryogenic engineer, requiring both hands-on fabrication skills and engineering-level knowledge of cryogenic systems.
