Core Job Responsibilities
- Patient Workups: Interviewing patients to document complete medical, systemic, and ocular histories.
- Preliminary Testing: Conducting initial vision screenings including visual acuity, pupil checks, and depth perception.
- Advanced Diagnostics: Operating specialized equipment for optical coherence tomography (OCT), automated refraction, corneal topography, and visual field tests.
- Tonometry: Measuring fluid pressure inside the eyes to screen for glaucoma.
- Scribing: Entering real-time data, exam findings, and physician notes directly into Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
- Surgical Assistance: Setting up sterile environments and preparing tools for minor in-office procedures or cataract/retina surgeries.
- Patient Education: Instructing patients on how to safely insert, remove, and care for contact lenses and post-operative medications.
- Equipment Upkeep: Cleaning, calibrating, and troubleshooting sensitive optical tools and clinical examination rooms.
Key Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, though a Diploma in Ophthalmic Technology or an Associate’s degree significantly increases job prospects.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating lensometers, autorefractors, and slit-lamp components.
- Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal communication, high empathy, and patience when managing anxious, young, or elderly patients.
