Role Overview: The Commis Chef is an entry-level culinary professional who supports the senior kitchen team in the preparation and execution of Continental cuisine. This role is fundamental to the kitchen's daily operations, focusing on learning various techniques, maintaining high standards of food hygiene, and ensuring all prep work is completed efficiently under the guidance of a Chef de Partie or Sous Chef.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mise en Place: Execute daily food preparation tasks, including washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients for the Continental station.
- Station Support: Assist senior chefs during service hours to ensure dishes are prepared and plated according to standard recipes and presentation guidelines.
- Learning & Development: Proactively learn and master Continental cooking techniques, such as basic sauce making, grilling, sautéing, and salad preparation.
- Stock Management: Assist in receiving deliveries, checking for quality and freshness, and ensuring proper storage and rotation of stock using the FIFO (First In, First Out) method.
- Cleanliness & Hygiene: Maintain a clean and organized workstation at all times. Assist in the deep cleaning of kitchen equipment and storage areas in compliance with health and safety standards.
- Collaboration: Work effectively as part of a team, communicating clearly with colleagues to ensure a smooth flow of service.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Basic Culinary Knowledge: Fundamental understanding of Continental ingredients, knife skills, and basic cooking methods.
- Experience: 0–2 years of experience in a professional kitchen environment. Fresh graduates with a strong passion for the culinary arts are encouraged to apply.
- Education: Certificate or Diploma in Culinary Arts, Hotel Management, or a related field.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods and work in a high-temperature, fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to Learn: A strong desire to grow within the culinary industry and a proactive approach to receiving feedback and instruction.
