Key Responsibilities
1. Pre-Operative Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating theatre for scheduled surgical procedures.
- Ensure availability and sterility of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Perform surgical hand scrub, gowning, and gloving according to established protocols.
- Arrange instrument trays and surgical materials as per procedure requirements.
- Verify patient identity, procedure details, and surgical site in coordination with the surgical team.
2. Intra-Operative Responsibilities
- Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques throughout surgical procedures.
- Anticipate the needs of surgeons and provide appropriate instruments, sutures, and supplies.
- Assist surgeons during operative procedures by passing instruments and maintaining an organized sterile field.
- Perform instrument, sponge, and needle counts according to hospital policies.
- Monitor the sterile field and report any contamination immediately.
- Handle surgical specimens appropriately and ensure proper labeling and documentation.
3. Post-Operative Responsibilities
- Complete final counts of instruments, needles, and sponges.
- Assist with patient transfer from the operating room to the recovery area.
- Ensure proper cleaning, decontamination, and dispatch of surgical instruments for sterilization.
- Prepare the operating theatre for subsequent procedures.
4. Infection Control and Patient Safety
- Adhere to infection prevention and control guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with biomedical waste management protocols.
- Maintain patient safety, dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
- Participate in surgical safety checklists and quality assurance activities.
5. Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, instrument counts, and consumables used.
- Report equipment malfunctions, incidents, or safety concerns promptly.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of surgical instruments and supplies.
6. Professional Responsibilities
- Follow hospital policies, nursing standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in continuing nursing education and competency training.
- Work collaboratively with surgeons, anesthetists, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Support emergency and trauma surgeries as required.
Qualifications
- B.Sc. Nursing / GNM Nursing with valid Nursing Council registration.
- Certification or training in Operation Theatre Nursing is desirable.
