Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Production Engineer to oversee and optimize our steel fabrication production lines. In this role, you will be responsible for planning, executing, and managing fabrication processes—ensuring that all structural steel, piping, or custom metal components are produced safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Production Planning & Execution
- Workflow Optimization: Plan and schedule daily production activities to meet project deadlines and maximize workshop capacity.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Review and interpret engineering drawings, Tekla/AutoCAD models, and Bill of Materials (BOM) to plan fabrication steps (cutting, bending, welding, assembly).
- Resource Allocation: Assign tasks to fabricators, welders, and machine operators based on skill levels and project requirements.
2. Process & Quality Control
- Standards Compliance: Ensure all fabrication work complies with relevant industry standards (e.g., AWS, AISC, ASME, ISO).
- Weld Quality: Monitor welding processes (MIG, TIG, SMAW) and coordinate with Quality Control (QC) for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) like visual, magnetic particle, or ultrasonic testing.
- Dimensional Accuracy: Oversee stage-wise and final inspections to ensure strict tolerance limits are met before components move to blasting, painting, or shipping.
3. Efficiency & Continuous Improvement
- Lean Manufacturing: Implement Lean or 5S methodologies to reduce material wastage, minimize downtime, and improve material handling flow.
- Machinery Management: Monitor the performance and maintenance of fabrication machinery (CNC plasma cutters, press brakes, rolling machines, welding stations).
- Troubleshooting: Identify production bottlenecks or technical issues on the shop floor and implement immediate, effective corrective actions.
4. Safety & Leadership
- HSE Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) protocols, including the correct use of PPE and safe crane/forklift operations.
- Team Supervision: Lead, mentor, and motivate the workshop crew, addressing skill gaps with targeted on-the-job training.
Requirements & QualificationsEducation & Experience
- Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Experience: 3 to 5+ years of hands-on production/shop floor experience specifically within a heavy steel fabrication or structural steel industry.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex 2D/3D fabrication drawings and structural blueprints.
- Strong understanding of steel grades, welding symbols, and various metal forming processes.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and Tekla Structures is highly desirable.
