Role Purpose
The Category Business Manager owns the commercial performance of an assigned category portfolio across marketplaces and
channels — this is not a traditional marketing-focused brand management role, and not a coordination, reporting, or task-passing
function. The primary responsibility is to drive profitable growth from existing products, existing inventory, and existing marketplace
capabilities: revenue growth, profitability improvement, inventory health, marketplace expansion, and execution excellence. You'll
work closely with cross-functional teams across marketplace operations, supply chain, sourcing, finance, marketing, and technology
— identifying opportunities, converting them into specific tasks, assigning ownership, following up relentlessly, removing roadblocks,
and ensuring closure.
What Success Looks Like
You think like the owner of a business, not the manager of a function. You focus on outcomes, not activities — comfortable making
decisions, driving execution, and being accountable for results.
- Existing products and categories sell more profitably across existing and new channels.
- Available inventory converts into revenue faster.
- Listings, pricing, availability, promotions, content, and marketplace execution improve continuously.
- Problems are identified before they become excuses; cross-functional teams complete agreed actions on time.
- Revenue, contribution margin, and inventory health improve consistently — without depending entirely on analysts or
dashboards.
Core Responsibilities
1. Own Category Commercial Performance: Take complete ownership of revenue, profitability, and growth targets for the assigned
category. Build and execute category growth plans, monitor performance continuously, and drive corrective action — including clear
recovery plans — when behind target.
2. Drive Revenue & Marketplace Growth: Grow sales across Amazon, Walmart, Shopify/D2C, TikTok Shop, and other marketplaces
by improving the existing catalog — underperforming SKUs, listings, geographies, and channels. Identify assortment-expansion and
marketplace-penetration opportunities, and improve SKU productivity without treating advertising as the default lever.
3. Manage Profitability: Improve contribution margins and overall category profitability through pricing optimization, promotional
effectiveness, and disciplined advertising efficiency and ROI monitoring. Any request for new products, extra ad spend, or margin
sacrifice needs a clear business case and expected return.
4. Own Inventory Health & Forecasting: Manage inventory health and working capital efficiency — reduce aged inventory and
stock-outs, and improve forecasting accuracy and replenishment planning. Understand landed cost, marketplace fees, and SKU-level
profitability, basing decisions on contribution and cash recovery, not revenue alone.
5. Drive Business Reviews & Cross-Functional Execution: Conduct weekly business reviews and convert objectives into clear tasks,
owners, deadlines, and expected outcomes across marketplace, sourcing, supply chain, finance, marketing, and technology teams.
Drive closure of action items, escalate risks and bottlenecks proactively, and maintain execution discipline across every growth
initiative.
6. Marketplace and Channel Execution: Ensure the full eligible assortment is listed accurately, and fix missing listings, suppressed
products, content gaps, pricing issues, lost buy boxes, and compliance problems. Benchmark competitor pricing, assortment, and
positioning across relevant channels.
7. Use Data, AI & Automation Effectively: Maintain a practical scorecard covering sales, profitability, inventory, and major initiatives.
Leverage AI and automation to improve productivity and business decision-making, and drive adoption of AI-powered tools across
category operations.
