Core Responsibilities
- Project Planning: Meet with clients to define goals, timelines, and budgets.
- Spatial Design: Use CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp) to create detailed 2D blueprints and 3D renderings for furniture placement, electrical layouts, and lighting.
- Material Selection: Source and specify materials, including flooring, wall finishes, furniture, and plumbing fixtures.
- Project Management: Coordinate with architects, engineers, and general contractors to ensure the design is executed correctly and remains on schedule.
- Compliance: Ensure all designs adhere to building codes, fire safety regulations, and universal accessibility standards.
- Sourcing & Procurement: Manage the purchase of FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment) and oversee their delivery and installation.
Required Skills & QualificationsEducation & Certification
- Degree: A Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or a related field (Architecture, Fine Arts) is standard.
- Licensing: Many regions require passing the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) exam to use the title "Interior Designer."
Technical Skills
- Software Proficiency: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, 3ds Max, and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop/InDesign).
- Drafting: Ability to read and create construction documents and technical drawings.
- Sustainability: Knowledge of green building standards (e.g., LEED certification).
Soft Skills
- Visualization: A strong sense of proportion and visual awareness.
- Communication: Presenting ideas clearly to clients and managing various site trades.
- Problem-Solving: Addressing site delays or material shortages on the fly.
