Company: N.R. Engineering Industries
Location: Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
Position Status: Pure Technical Track / Individual Contributor (IC)
Reports To: Managing Director / Operations Head
Core Purpose of the Role
The Senior Specialist – Plastic Tooling & NPD Engineering will serve as the core technical authority for all new plastic component developments at N.R. Engineering. This individual is responsible for the complete engineering lifecycle of a tool—from initial DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and multi-cavity mould design to hands-on troubleshooting during T0/T1 floor trials.
The goal is absolute technical precision: ensuring every new tool is built right the first time, achieves optimal cycle times, and eliminates defect risks before hitting commercial production.
Key Technical Responsibilities & Deliverables1. Advanced Tool Design & Flow Simulation (DFM)
- Execute detailed Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews on upcoming plastic components, identifying potential manufacturing risks like sink marks, weld lines, and draft constraints.
- Architect 3D layouts for high-precision plastic injection moulds, specializing in complex mechanisms (e.g., hot runners, sliders, lifters, and multi-cavity unscrewing configurations).
- Run, analyze, and interpret Moldflow Simulations to optimize gate locations, runner balances, venting paths, and cooling circuit efficiencies.
2. Hands-On Tool Fabrication & Metal Cutting Parameters
- Define exact raw material steel selections (e.g., Stavax, H13, P20) and heat-treatment specifications tailored to tool longevity expectations.
- Generate and audit high-speed CNC/VMC machining programs, electrode geometry for spark EDMs, and precise wire-cut profiles.
- Establish micron-level matching tolerances for core-to-cavity slide engagements to completely prevent part flash during injection.
3. T0 to Part Approval (PPAP) Trial Troubleshooting
- Physically stand at the injection moulding machine during T0, T1, and T2 development trials.
- Troubleshoot tool behavior live on the floor—interpreting defect patterns (e.g., short shots, burn marks, gas traps, or dimensional warpage) and executing precision tool modifications on-site.
- Validate that final component profiles strictly match client blueprint tolerances prior to handing the tool over to commercial production.
Candidate Profile & Required Technical Competencies
- Experience: 8 to 14 years of hand-on expertise completely embedded inside a high-end plastic mould manufacturing tool room or NPD facility. Must have a proven track record of successfully delivering complex injection tools.
- Software Mastery: Expert, lightning-fast command of Unigraphics NX (UG-NX), Creo Mould Design, and Moldflow Advisor. Candidates must be able to design complex tools live during technical evaluations.
- Education: Diploma in Tool & Die Making from a specialized institute. A B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with a deep tool-room background is also highly acceptable.
- Core Skillset: Complete understanding of precision toolroom metrology instruments (CMM, profile projectors, digital height gauges) and advanced knowledge of hot runner system tuning (Yudo, Synventive, Mold-Masters).
