Key Responsibilities of a Quality Engineer in a PEB Plant1. Raw Material Inspection
- Verify incoming steel plates, coils, sections, bolts, welding consumables, and paint materials.
- Check material test certificates (MTCs) and supplier documentation.
- Ensure materials conform to project specifications and relevant standards.
2. In-Process Quality Control
- Monitor cutting, drilling, punching, shearing, and forming operations.
- Inspect dimensions and tolerances of fabricated members.
- Ensure fabrication processes follow approved drawings and work instructions.
- Conduct stage-wise inspections during production.
3. Welding Quality Assurance
- Verify welder qualifications and welding procedures.
- Inspect weld preparation, fit-up, and welding parameters.
- Perform visual inspection of welds.
- Coordinate and review Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) such as:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT), if required
4. Dimensional Inspection
- Check fabricated columns, rafters, bracings, and other structural members.
- Verify dimensions against approved fabrication drawings.
- Use measuring instruments such as:
- Vernier calipers
- Micrometers
- Measuring tapes
- Height gauges
- Total stations (where applicable)
5. Surface Preparation and Painting Inspection
- Verify blast cleaning standards.
- Check surface profile and cleanliness.
- Monitor paint mixing, application, and curing.
- Measure Dry Film Thickness (DFT) and ensure compliance with specifications.
6. Final Inspection and Dispatch Clearance
- Conduct final inspection before packing and dispatch.
- Ensure all quality records are completed.
- Verify marking, identification, and traceability of members.
- Approve dispatch documentation.
7. Documentation and Quality Records
- Prepare and maintain:
- Inspection reports
- Quality checklists
- NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports)
- Corrective and Preventive Action Reports (CAPA)
- Inspection & Test Plans (ITP)
- Maintain ISO 9001 quality documentation.
8. Non-Conformance Management
- Identify quality issues and deviations.
- Raise NCRs for non-conforming products.
- Perform root cause analysis using tools such as:
- 5 Why Analysis
- Fishbone Diagram
- Pareto Analysis
- Implement corrective and preventive actions.
9. Customer and Third-Party Inspection Coordination
- Coordinate inspections with clients, consultants, and third-party agencies.
- Present quality documents and inspection records.
- Ensure compliance with project-specific requirements.
10. Continuous Improvement
- Analyze quality trends and rejection data.
- Reduce rework and scrap.
- Improve production processes through quality initiatives.
- Support Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma activities.
Skills Required
- Reading structural and fabrication drawings.
- Welding inspection knowledge.
- Knowledge of NDT methods.
- Understanding of steel fabrication processes.
- Quality management systems (QMS).
- Root cause analysis and problem-solving.
- Familiarity with ERP and quality documentation systems.
- Good communication and reporting skills.
