About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer III – Cognos & Databricks Modernization to join our team on a 6-month contract, with the possibility of extension. The role is ideal for someone who can bridge traditional Business Intelligence (BI) and modern data engineering, work closely with business stakeholders, and deliver scalable, reliable reporting and analytics solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, enhance, and support IBM Cognos reports, dashboards, and Framework Manager models.
- Develop and optimize complex SQL queries for enterprise-scale datasets.
- Build and maintain scalable data pipelines using Python, PySpark, and Databricks.
- Develop Databricks SQL dashboards, reports, and visualizations.
- Analyze existing Cognos reporting solutions and support their modernization toward cloud-based analytics platforms.
- Participate in Cognos-to-modern analytics/cloud migration initiatives.
- Translate business and reporting requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Work with data engineers, architects, product teams, and business stakeholders to develop effective data models and semantic layers.
- Implement data quality, validation, performance optimization, and reporting best practices.
- Troubleshoot production issues and ensure reliability, accuracy, and performance of reporting solutions.
- Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, testing, and release activities.
- Maintain technical documentation and contribute to engineering standards and continuous improvement.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience.
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, BI development, or analytics development.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with IBM Cognos.
- Strong experience with Cognos Framework Manager, including data modeling and package development.
- Hands-on experience developing Cognos reports and dashboards.
- Strong SQL development and query optimization skills.
- Strong programming experience with Python.
- Hands-on experience with PySpark / Apache Spark and distributed data processing.
- Hands-on experience with Databricks and the Databricks Lakehouse Platform.
- Experience developing Databricks SQL dashboards and visualizations.
- Good understanding of ETL/ELT, data warehousing, and dimensional data modeling.
- Experience with Git/GitHub or similar source control systems.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, documentation, and stakeholder management skills.
Good to Have
- Experience migrating Cognos reports/solutions to Databricks or other modern cloud analytics platforms.
- Experience with Snowflake.
- Experience with Delta Lake.
- Exposure to AWS or Azure cloud platforms.
- Experience with Apache Airflow or other data orchestration tools.
- Knowledge of REST APIs.
- Exposure to CI/CD and DevOps practices.
- Understanding of data governance, data quality, and data catalog concepts.
- Experience working on financial, compliance, operational, legal, or enterprise reporting solutions.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Microsoft Copilot.
