Role Overview
The Head of Design – Transformers will lead the end-to-end design and engineering function for Rhine Group’s transformer product portfolio, including distribution transformers, power transformers, and special application transformers. This role is responsible for ensuring technically robust, cost-optimized, and manufacturable designs that meet customer specifications, regulatory standards, and internal quality benchmarks.
This is a strategic leadership role requiring deep technical expertise, strong team leadership, and cross-functional collaboration with production, sales, quality, and procurement.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the transformer design function across product categories including distribution transformers (DT), power transformers (PT), and specialty transformers.
- Define design philosophy, standards, and technical guidelines aligned with company growth strategy.
- Drive continuous improvement in design efficiency, cost optimization, and performance.
- Establish scalable design processes to support volume growth and product diversification.
2. Technical Design & Engineering
Oversee complete transformer design lifecycle including:
- Electrical design (core, winding, insulation coordination)
- Thermal design and loss optimization
- Mechanical design and structural integrity
- Short-circuit withstand capability
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards including:
- IS (Indian Standards)
- IEC
- BIS
- Utility specifications
- Review and approve all design calculations, drawings, and technical documentation.
3. Tender & Order Engineering
- Lead tender design, costing inputs, and technical proposal preparation.
- Ensure timely and accurate design support for customer orders.
- Support sales team with technical clarifications and customer interactions.
4. Cost Optimization & Value Engineering
Optimize designs to improve:
- Material utilization (CRGO, copper, aluminum, insulation)
- Loss performance
- Manufacturing efficiency
- Overall product cost competitiveness
- Drive value engineering initiatives across existing product lines.
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with:
- Production for manufacturability and process improvements
- Procurement for material standardization and vendor development
- Quality for failure analysis and corrective actions
- Sales and business teams for customer-specific requirements
6. Team Leadership & Capability Building
- Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing transformer design team.
- Establish structured design review and approval processes.
- Develop technical competencies across the engineering team.
- Create succession planning and technical leadership bench strength.
7. Innovation & Product Development
- Lead development of new transformer products aligned with market needs.
- Improve energy efficiency, compactness, and reliability of products.
- Support strategic initiatives such as exports, new voltage classes, and new applications.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (required)
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred)
Experience:
- 12–20 years of transformer design experience
- Minimum 5 years in a leadership role
Hands-on experience in design of:
- Distribution transformers (up to 10 MVA)
- Power transformers (preferred)
- Experience with utility approvals and customer specifications
Technical Skills
Strong expertise in:
- Transformer electrical and mechanical design
- Design calculations and loss optimization
- CRGO core design and winding design
- Insulation systems and thermal design
- Short-circuit calculations
- IS, IEC standards
Familiarity with design tools such as:
- AutoCAD
- Transformer design software (if applicable)
- MS Excel and engineering calculation tools

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: ₹2,400,000.00 - ₹4,000,000.00 per year
