What does a Drupal Technical Lead do at WPP Production?
A Drupal Technical Lead at WPP Production is responsible for leading development teams and driving the technical direction of enterprise-grade Drupal solutions. The role involves defining and implementing architecture for both monolithic and headless (decoupled) CMS platforms, while ensuring scalable, secure, and high-performance web applications. They collaborate closely with product, design, and QA teams to define requirements and delivery plans, oversee API and microservices development, and ensure smooth integration between front-end systems and CMS layers. In addition, they enforce coding standards and best practices, guide technology decisions including CMS selection, participate in Agile delivery processes, and proactively manage technical risks to ensure successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee complex cloud migration and transformation projects, ensuring minimal downtime and smooth transitions
- Contribute to Architecture Review Board (ARB) and Change Advisory Board (CAB) discussions
- Provide accurate technical estimations and inputs for RFPs and solution design
- Define and document end-to-end system architectures, ensuring scalability and performance
- Ensure security, compliance, and governance standards are implemented across systems
- Drive integration of Drupal with enterprise platforms and non-Drupal technologies
- Monitor system performance and implement optimizations to meet SLAs
- Promote Drupal adoption and advocate best practices across teams and stakeholders
- Mentor teams, conduct code reviews, and enable continuous skill development
Requirements
- Strong expertise in Drupal 9+, including core APIs, hooks, and custom module development
- Experience with decoupled CMS architectures and headless Drupal implementations
- Proficiency in JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, CSS3, and frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue.js
- Backend development experience with PHP, Node.js, .NET, or Java
- Strong knowledge of REST APIs, GraphQL, and integration patterns
- Database expertise: MySQL, PostgreSQL
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerized environments
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Strong understanding of Agile methodologies
Drupal Expertise
- Extensive experience building and maintaining Drupal 9+ applications
- Expertise in custom module and theme development
- Strong understanding of Drupal theming layer and responsive design
- Hands-on experience with headless Drupal and API-driven content delivery
- Proficiency with GraphQL / JSON APIs for frontend integration
- Deep knowledge of Drupal Configuration Management across environments
- Experience designing content workflows and moderation systems
- Strong understanding of roles, permissions, and security best practices
- Experience with multilingual and multisite Drupal implementations
- Performance optimization using Drupal Cache API, Varnish, Memcached
- Database tuning and performance analysis for large-scale Drupal applications
- Ability to evaluate and select appropriate contributed modules
Bonus
- Experience contributing to the Drupal community (patches, modules, etc.)
