As a Senior Software Engineer, Data Platform, you'll join the Data Platform & Engineering team that builds and runs the data systems behind Skillz. These systems move data from across the business into the warehouse in real time, turn it into trusted datasets, and power the analytics, machine learning, and player segmentation that teams across the company rely on. You'll help operate this platform, make it faster and more reliable, and extend it with new capabilities.
The platform is a large, live system that spans real-time ingestion, change-data-capture, the warehouse, streaming segmentation, and production ML. Part of the role is going deep on what already exists and improving it. A bigger part is helping move the platform toward an AI-native way of working, where LLMs and agents help run, monitor, and optimize the pipelines themselves.
What you'll do
- Design and build data services and pipelines, and evolve the platform as the business grows.
- Move data in real time with streaming pipelines and sub-second segmentation that drive live product decisions.
- Own reliability, performance, and cost across the warehouse fleet, and treat observability and efficiency as core engineering work.
- Bring AI into the platform: use LLMs for analytics, data quality, and pipeline automation, and help build production agents that operate parts of the platform on their own.
- Make data trustworthy and self-serve, and support the Business Intelligence and User Acquisition teams that depend on it.
Minimum qualifications
- 5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems, ideally data-intensive ones.
- Strong engineering fundamentals: you write production-quality code in Python, Java, or Go, are fluent in SQL, and care about testing, code review, and system design.
- Hands-on production experience with distributed data systems and a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or similar) at meaningful scale.
- Experience designing and building scalable services that move, transform, and serve data reliably.
- Familiarity with orchestration tools (Airflow, Jenkins) and stream processing tools (Kafka, Spark, or Flink).
- A track record of ramping on a large existing codebase and improving it. You can debug, refactor, and extend systems you didn't write, not just build from scratch.
- Hands-on production use of LLMs. You've shipped an LLM-backed system (prompts, tool or function calling, retrieval) with evals, guardrails, and a clear failure mode, not just prototypes.
- Able to work in a hybrid model out of our Bangalore office.
- Experience in the Gaming Industry (ideally).
- Proficient in Java (Spring Boot or similar framework) or Python (Flask or similar framework) for backend development.
- Experience building out segmentation platforms.
- Supported Business Intelligence and User Acquisition functions.
- Machine Learning (ML) experience.
- Experience with recognized industry patterns, methodologies, and techniques.
Together, we'll create a world where skill, passion, and innovation thrive. Join our team and be part of the journey. We look forward to having you on board!
