Position: OT Running Nurse
Department: Operation Theatre (OT)
Reports To: OT In-charge / Nurse Manager
Job Summary
The OT Running Nurse is responsible for providing nursing support during surgical procedures by ensuring the availability of sterile supplies, instruments, equipment, and medications. The nurse assists the surgical team while maintaining patient safety and adhering to infection control protocols.
Key Responsibilities Pre-operative Responsibilities
- Prepare the operation theatre before surgery.
- Check the functioning of OT equipment, lights, suction apparatus, cautery machine, and monitors.
- Arrange surgical instruments, consumables, implants, and medications as per the procedure list.
- Verify patient identity, consent, surgical site, and pre-operative checklist.
- Coordinate with CSSD, pharmacy, laboratory, and blood bank for required items.
Intra-operative Responsibilities
- Assist the surgical team during procedures.
- Open sterile packs and supplies aseptically.
- Fetch additional instruments, sutures, implants, medications, or blood products as required.
- Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments along with the scrub nurse.
- Document intra-operative nursing records and medication administration.
- Ensure proper specimen labeling and transportation to the laboratory.
- Respond promptly to emergencies and support resuscitation efforts.
Post-operative Responsibilities
- Assist in transferring the patient safely to the recovery room or ICU.
- Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste.
- Arrange for cleaning and disinfection of the OT after each case.
- Prepare the theatre for the next procedure.
- Report equipment malfunction or shortages to the OT In-charge.
Qualifications
- Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) or B.Sc. Nursing.
- Valid Nursing Council registration.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 1–3 years of experience in an Operation Theatre setting preferred.
Skills Required
- Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Familiarity with surgical instruments and procedures.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle emergency situations.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
