Assistant Production Manager
Full-Time
Position Summary
The Assistant Production Manager supports the Production Manager in the day-to-day running of the honey packing and production floor, including, filling, labeling, packaging, and shipment preparation. This role provides hands-on operational support, coordinates a small team, contributes to production planning, and helps ensure every batch of honey meets quality, food-safety, and customer specifications on time.
Key Responsibilities
- Operations Management: Provide operational support across the production floor and act as first point of contact for day-to-day production issues, using established systems, SOPs, and protocols to keep lines running smoothly.
- Operating Machines and Equipment: Operate and adjust production equipment — including filling and capping lines, labeling and coding machines, shrink-wrap and case-sealing equipment, and palletizing tools — to optimize honey quality, fill accuracy, and line throughput. Identify and resolve recurring inefficiencies on the line.
- Production Planning: Contribute data to daily and weekly production plans: run reports on batch output, yield, and downtime; check figures for accuracy; and distribute production information to the Production Manager and relevant teams.
- Leadership and Direction: Coordinate line staff and packers during shifts while performing hands-on production work alongside the team.
- Equipment Changeover: Assist with changeovers between honey varieties, container sizes, and label formats, and conduct changeover inspections under guidance to confirm the line is set correctly before restart.
- Equipment Total Productive Maintenance: Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment issues, support emergency repairs, and carry out routine preventive maintenance on fillers, cappers, labelers, and packaging machinery.
- Work Scheduling and Allocation: Organize your own daily schedule to meet production targets, coordinate with QA, warehouse, and maintenance, and assign short-term tasks to line staff as needed.
- Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE): Follow all HSE policies and food-safety procedures, including GMP and allergen controls, to identify and mitigate risks and protect the wellbeing of yourself, your team, and the product.
- Quality Assurance: Prioritize your workflow to ensure production runs meet quality and timeliness standards; maintain accurate Batch Manufacturing Records (BMR) and logbooks; perform in-process checks such as fill volume, moisture content, and viscosity; and use performance data to improve your own output.
- Organizational Capability Building: Coach and mentor line operators and packers to build their skills on equipment and quality checks.
- Operational Compliance: Develop and maintain working knowledge of company policies, food-safety regulations, and honey-labeling requirements (e.g., net weight, country of origin, allergen statements), adhering to mandatory procedures at all times.
- Internal Communications: Use internal communication systems to access production schedules, quality alerts, and shift updates.
- Improvement/Innovation: Support the implementation of process improvements on the production floor and give feedback on their effectiveness, using the company's change-management protocols.
Authority
- Execute production activities as per approved SOPs and procedures.
- Report deviations, quality issues, and equipment faults and escalate to the Production Manager.
- Coordinate short-term task assignments among line staff during a shift.
Values & Behaviours
- Ingenious: Makes sense of complex or sometimes contradictory production information to solve problems — looking at issues from multiple angles and exploring root causes. Follows defined standards and procedures, seeks advice, and looks for ways to work better within existing processes.
- Collaborative: Creates a climate where the team is motivated to do its best — sharing the purpose behind the work, involving others appropriately, giving credit, and recognizing successes.
- Principled: Holds self and others accountable for commitments — accepts responsibility for outcomes and generally meets commitments to others. Listens attentively, keeps others well informed, and conveys information clearly, concisely, and professionally.
- Driven: Plans and sequences work logically, aligns work with other teams, and takes steps to reduce bottlenecks and speed up production. Holds self to high standards, sets challenging goals, and pursues tasks to successful completion. Takes timely action on important issues and adapts approach as production demands shift.

- - Review and Reporting: Reviews production data and creates clear, accurate reports with guidance from the Production Manager.
- - Equipment Utilization: Applies working knowledge to optimize the use of production equipment, materials, and floor space, while guiding others in doing the same.
- - Equipment Operation: Ability to operate weighing balances, automatic filling and capping lines, shrink-wrap machines, inkjet coders/date printers, labeling machines, and case-packing/palletizing equipment.
- - Compliance: Working knowledge of SOPs, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and relevant food-safety standards (e.g., HACCP, FDA food-labeling requirements).
- - Documentation: Maintaining Batch Manufacturing Records (BMR), production logbooks, and traceability documentation.
- - Quality Checks: Basic understanding of in-process checks such as fill volume, moisture content, viscosity, and color grading.
- - Maintenance: Basic mechanical troubleshooting on packaging and filling equipment.
