Job Summary
The Hospital Pharmacist is responsible for the safe procurement, storage, dispensing, and management of medicines and medical supplies in the hospital. The pharmacist ensures accurate dispensing of prescriptions, compliance with drug regulations, and proper inventory control, while supporting doctors and nursing staff with medication-related information to ensure safe and effective patient care.
Key Responsibilities1. Medication Dispensing
- Dispense medicines as per doctor’s prescriptions accurately.
- Verify prescriptions for dosage, drug interactions, allergies, and contraindications.
- Provide proper instructions to patients on medication usage, dosage, and precautions.
- Ensure proper labeling of all dispensed medicines.
2. Inventory Management
- Maintain adequate stock of medicines, surgical items, and consumables.
- Monitor expiry dates and batch numbers regularly.
- Maintain minimum and maximum stock levels.
- Ensure FIFO/FEFO (First Expiry First Out) inventory practice.
3. Procurement & Vendor Coordination
- Coordinate with suppliers for medicine procurement.
- Verify purchase invoices and delivery notes.
- Maintain records of drug purchases and consumption.
- Ensure procurement from licensed vendors only.
4. Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Drugs and Cosmetics Act & Pharmacy regulations.
- Maintain Schedule H, H1, and X drug registers.
- Maintain narcotics and controlled drug records as per regulations.
- Ensure pharmacy license is valid and displayed.
5. Storage & Safety
- Ensure medicines are stored at appropriate temperature and conditions.
- Maintain cold chain for temperature-sensitive medicines.
- Ensure pharmacy cleanliness and safety standards.
6. Documentation & Record Keeping
- Maintain drug dispensing records and stock registers.
- Update pharmacy management software/HIS if applicable.
- Prepare daily and monthly pharmacy reports.
7. Coordination with Hospital Departments
- Coordinate with doctors and nursing staff for medication availability.
- Assist in medication reconciliation for inpatients.
- Provide drug information support when required.
8. Patient Counseling
- Educate patients regarding:
- Proper medication usage
- Side effects
- Storage instructions
- Drug interactions
Qualifications
- Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) or Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)
- Registered Pharmacist with State Pharmacy Council
Experience
- 1 – 5 years experience in hospital pharmacy preferred.
- Freshers may be considered depending on hospital policy.
Skills Required
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs and dosage forms
- Understanding of drug regulations and pharmacy laws
- Inventory management skills
- Basic knowledge of Hospital Information System (HIS)
- Good communication and patient counseling skills
- Attention to accuracy and detail
Working Conditions
- Rotational shifts including night duties (if applicable)
- May involve working in IP pharmacy, OP pharmacy, or emergency pharmacy
