Lead Counsel 1 is an intermediate position where the overall objective is to provide legal support, advice, and guidance to the Trade and Working Capital Solutions business (“TWCS Business”). This role forms part of the TWCS Legal located at the Mumbai Global Legal Office that provides product legal support to the TWCS Business across JANA and Asia South clusters. TWCS Business offerings fall under the following product pillars: Core Trade, Payables and Receivables Financing, Trade Loans, Export Agency Finance, and Asset Distribution with sub-products under each pillar.
This role requires a pragmatic, proactive attorney with thorough understanding of the TWCS Business pillars who can analyze and provide sound legal advice that is risk-appropriate, and commercially practical on primarily cross-border deals, including:
- identifying any concerns/risks present in TWCS transactions/the deal structure, any deviations from product parameters, Citi standards, other legal or franchise issues, and/or deviations from the standard documentation;
- Engaging in discussion/consultation with TWCS Legal colleagues in other clusters, and other legal teams (where necessary) on, among others, legal and franchise issues;
- Working closely with Compliance, Risk, and other control partners with respect to advisory and documentation issues, both at the cluster and country level;
- Drafting and/or reviewing product documentation for Asia clusters, and handling negotiations;
- Updating product documentation to reflect changes in law, product offering, and/or alignment with global templates for roll-out in the Asia clusters;
- Advising on changes in law and regulations relevant to the TWCS Business across key countries in the Asia clusters; and
- Participating in global/cluster-wide TWCS projects, including the development of new
- internal standard form templates and AI use cases for the team.
Qualifications:
- Banking or financial industry experience preferred
- Experience in Trade finance or loan transactions/matters is an advantage
- Experience with cross-border and complex deals, demonstrated ability to analyze issues and develop legal solutions
- Effective communication and negotiation skills and ability to build and maintain trusted relationships
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to apply sound judgement while managing assignments in a demanding, fast-paced environment
Education:
LLB (Bachelor of Laws) or equivalent law degree
