Job Description (JD) – Radiographer / X-Ray Technician
Location: Tiruchirappalli International Airport
Department: Indian Customs Department
Reporting To: Customs Superintendent / Assistant Commissioner of Customs
Position Summary
The Radiographer/X-Ray Technician will be responsible for operating and monitoring X-ray scanning systems used for baggage, cargo, parcels, and other consignments at the airport. The role supports Customs operations by identifying suspicious items, assisting in anti-smuggling activities, ensuring compliance with security protocols, and maintaining scanning equipment and records.
Key ResponsibilitiesX-Ray Screening & Image Analysis
- Operate X-ray scanning systems for passenger baggage, cargo, courier consignments, and parcels.
- Analyze X-ray images to identify prohibited, undeclared, or suspicious items.
- Flag suspicious consignments for secondary inspection and physical verification.
- Assist Customs officers in anti-smuggling and revenue protection activities.
- Maintain confidentiality of scanned data and inspection findings.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Conduct daily operational checks of X-ray equipment.
- Ensure proper calibration and functioning of scanners.
- Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate with maintenance vendors.
- Maintain equipment logs and service records.
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to radiation safety standards and Customs security protocols.
- Ensure safe operation of X-ray systems and use of protective equipment.
- Follow airport, Customs, and regulatory guidelines at all times.
Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare daily screening and inspection reports.
- Maintain records of scanned cargo, baggage, and suspicious detections.
- Assist in investigations by providing image analysis and supporting documentation.
- Generate periodic operational reports for management review.
Qualification Requirements
- Diploma / B.Sc. in Radiography, Medical Imaging Technology, Radiological Technology, or equivalent.
- Certification in X-Ray Scanner Operations or Image Interpretation is preferred.
- Minimum 1–3 years of experience in X-ray equipment operation, preferably in airports, cargo terminals, logistics hubs, or security screening environments.
- Knowledge of Customs, aviation security, or cargo screening procedures will be an added advantage.
Skills Required
- X-ray image interpretation and analysis.
- Knowledge of baggage and cargo screening procedures.
- Understanding of radiation safety standards.
- Attention to detail and observation skills.
- Computer proficiency and report preparation.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Competencies
- Detection of concealed goods, narcotics, precious metals, currency, and other prohibited items.
- Familiarity with cargo scanner software and image enhancement tools.
- Experience in airport, port, logistics, or border control operations.
Working Conditions
- Shift-based duty at airport terminals, cargo complexes, and Customs screening areas.
- Continuous monitoring of X-ray screens and inspection systems.
- Compliance with airport security clearance and Customs regulations.
