ob Summary
The Physician Assistant – Orthopaedics supports Orthopaedic Consultants in providing comprehensive patient care across the Outpatient Department (OPD), Inpatient Department (IPD), Emergency, Operation Theatre (OT), and follow-up clinics. The role includes assisting in patient assessment, coordinating investigations, supporting surgical procedures, maintaining documentation, educating patients, and ensuring adherence to hospital protocols, NABH standards, and patient safety practices.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Responsibilities
- Assist Orthopaedic Consultants during OPD consultations and inpatient rounds.
- Obtain and document patient history, perform preliminary physical assessments, and record clinical findings.
- Prepare patients for examination and assist in clinical procedures.
- Coordinate diagnostic investigations such as X-rays, CT, MRI, laboratory tests, and ensure timely follow-up of reports.
- Monitor patient progress and promptly report any change in clinical condition to the consultant.
- Assist in fracture management, splinting, casting, wound care, dressing, and suture removal as directed.
- Support emergency orthopaedic cases and trauma management under consultant supervision.
- Participate in pre-operative and post-operative patient care.
Operation Theatre Responsibilities
- Assist the consultant during orthopaedic surgeries as assigned.
- Ensure availability of implants, surgical instruments, and required consumables before surgery.
- Coordinate with OT staff regarding case scheduling and patient preparation.
- Maintain sterile techniques and infection control practices during procedures.
- Ensure proper documentation of surgical procedures and implants used.
Documentation & Coordination
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records in the Hospital Information System (HIS).
- Prepare discharge summaries, operative notes, referral notes, and medical certificates as instructed.
- Coordinate admissions, referrals, consultations, and follow-up appointments.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Patient Education
- Educate patients and attendants regarding treatment plans, medications, rehabilitation, exercises, and follow-up care.
- Provide counselling on post-operative precautions and recovery protocols.
- Address patient queries within the scope of practice.
Quality & Compliance
- Adhere to NABH standards, hospital policies, and clinical protocols.
- Follow infection prevention and patient safety guidelines.
- Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement initiatives, CMEs, and training programmes.
- Report adverse events, medication errors, and clinical incidents as per hospital policy.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist in maintaining departmental records, registers, and reports.
- Coordinate with Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiology, Laboratory, Pharmacy, and other departments for seamless patient care.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Consultant or Hospital Management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies (B.Sc. Physician Assistant) or equivalent from a recognized institution.
