Job Summary
We are seeking a highly competent Purchase Engineer to manage procurement of engineering components, raw materials, cutting tools, and services. The role demands strong technical understanding, sharp negotiation skills, and fast decision-making to ensure cost-effective and timely sourcing without compromising quality.
This position plays a critical role in maintaining production continuity, cost efficiency, and supplier reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Source and procure engineering materials, tools, inserts, fixtures, and services
- Interpret technical drawings, BOMs, and specifications for accurate procurement
- Float RFQs and conduct technical + commercial comparison of vendors
- Lead price negotiations, delivery timelines, and payment terms with suppliers
- Identify and develop new vendors and alternate sourcing options
- Maintain and manage Approved Vendor List (AVL)
- Ensure on-time procurement to avoid production delays
- Monitor vendor performance (quality, delivery, cost, responsiveness)
- Handle rejections, returns, and vendor corrective actions
- Work closely with production, quality, and design teams for requirement clarity
- Track market trends for cost optimization and risk mitigation
- Maintain accurate purchase records, documentation, and ERP updates
Requirements & Skills
- Strong negotiation and cost optimization skills
- Excellent decision-making ability under time and cost pressure
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
- Knowledge of materials (alloys, steels, Inconel, etc.) and machining processes
- Understanding of cutting tools, inserts, and precision components
- Strong analytical and vendor evaluation skills
- Proficiency in MS Excel, ERP systems, and reporting tools
- Effective communication and supplier management abilities
Qualification
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Experience
- 2–6 years in engineering procurement / manufacturing industry
- Experience in precision machining / CNC / VMC environment preferred
Preferred (High-Value Skills)
- Experience in Manufacturing Industry
- Knowledge of costing, machining cycles, and material sourcing
- Familiarity with import procurement and vendor contracts
- Strong network of tooling and material suppliers
