Department: Tannery Operations & Production
Location: Kolkata, West Bengal
Reporting To: Director / Operations Head / Factory Head
Salary: ₹40,000 – ₹50,000 per month (Depending on experience, expertise, and industry knowledge)
Job Summary:
We are looking for an experienced and result-oriented Senior Tannery In-Charge to oversee and manage day-to-day tannery operations, ensuring production targets, leather quality standards, process efficiency, and timely delivery requirements are achieved.
The candidate should possess strong practical knowledge of leather processing, tanning operations, chemical applications, production planning, quality control, manpower management, and customer requirements. The role requires close coordination with production, quality, merchandising, and procurement teams to ensure consistent quality and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Tannery Operations Management
- Oversee complete tannery operations from raw hide/skin processing to finished leather production.
- Ensure smooth execution of soaking, liming, fleshing, deliming, bating, pickling, tanning, re-tanning, dyeing, fatliquoring, drying, staking, buffing, finishing, and other leather processing activities.
- Monitor production schedules and ensure timely completion of work orders.
- Ensure optimum utilization of manpower, machinery, chemicals, and raw materials.
Leather Quality Control
- Monitor leather quality at every stage of processing.
- Ensure consistency in color, softness, thickness, grain appearance, texture, and physical properties.
- Identify and resolve quality issues related to tanning, dyeing, finishing, and processing.
- Work closely with Quality Control teams to meet customer specifications and export standards.
Production Planning & Process Control
- Plan daily production activities based on delivery schedules and customer requirements.
- Monitor production efficiency and minimize process delays.
- Ensure process parameters are maintained according to technical standards.
- Optimize production methods to improve productivity and reduce wastage.
Chemical & Material Management
- Monitor usage of tanning chemicals, dyes, pigments, oils, and finishing materials.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of chemicals.
- Coordinate with purchase and store departments for timely availability of materials.
- Control chemical consumption and reduce processing costs without compromising quality.
Manpower Management
- Supervise tannery supervisors, operators, technicians, and workers.
- Allocate manpower effectively across production processes.
- Train and guide employees on tanning techniques, quality requirements, and safety procedures.
- Maintain discipline and productivity within the department.
Maintenance & Safety
- Ensure proper maintenance of drums, machines, finishing equipment, and utilities.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams for preventive and breakdown maintenance.
- Enforce safety standards, environmental regulations, and factory compliance requirements.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and safe handling of chemicals.
Coordination & Communication
Coordinate with:

Ø Merchandising Team

Ø Stores Department
Ø Maintenance Team
- Participate in production review meetings and provide operational updates to management.
Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain daily production reports.
- Monitor leather yield, chemical consumption, rejection levels, and productivity reports.
- Prepare MIS reports related to production performance and quality parameters.
- Report operational challenges and recommend corrective actions.
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Strong practical knowledge of leather tanning and finishing processes.
- Thorough understanding of leather chemistry and processing techniques.
- Knowledge of leather quality standards and export requirements.
- Strong leadership and manpower management skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot production and quality issues.
- Good planning, analytical, and decision-making abilities.
- Proficiency in production reporting and documentation.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet production deadlines.
Educational Qualification
- Diploma / Degree in Leather Technology, Leather Processing, Chemical Technology, or related field preferred.
- Technical training in leather manufacturing will be an added advantage.
Experience Required:
- Minimum 10–15 years of experience in tannery operations.
- At least 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role within a tannery.
- Experience in export-oriented leather manufacturing units will be preferred.
- Strong exposure to finished leather production for bags, wallets, footwear, upholstery, or leather goods.
