Job Summary: The Pharmacist is responsible for accurate dispensing of medications, reviewing prescriptions, maintaining pharmacy inventory, and ensuring compliance with legal and professional standards. The role involves operational duties in both OP (Outpatient) and IP (Inpatient) pharmacies, ensuring timely and safe supply of medications to patients and nursing stations as per physician orders.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Prescription Review & Dispensing
- Review physician prescriptions for correctness, therapeutic appropriateness, dosage, and legality.
- Dispense medications accurately by compounding, packaging, and labeling.
- Provide necessary drug information and counselling to patients (OP) and advise nursing staff on medication administration (IP).
- Monitor drug therapies and report adverse reactions or interactions to physicians when necessary.
OP Pharmacy Responsibilities
- Dispense prescribed medicines directly to patients with proper counselling.
- Handle patient queries politely and ensure patient satisfaction.
- Provide instructions related to dosage, timings, food interactions, and precautions.
- Reduce patient waiting time through efficient service and systematic workflow.
- Handle pharmacy billing, sales invoices, and daily cash/account closing.
IP Pharmacy Responsibilities
- Review medication requisitions from wards and supply drugs promptly to nursing staff.
- Prepare medication carts/trays for IP ward distribution and scheduled dose delivery.
- Ensure timely indenting of medicines for IP demands including regular, stat, and emergency orders.
- Maintain proper documentation and bin cards for each drug category.
- Track high-alert medications, narcotics/controlled drugs, and maintain register compliance.
- Coordinate with nursing team for timely returns of unused/near-expiry medicines.
Inventory & Stock Control
- Maintain control over stocking, storage, and labeling of medicines and products.
- Monitor inventory for shortages, excess, near-expiry items, and initiate required actions.
- Ensure FEFO (First Expiry First Out) method in both OP & IP pharmacies.
- Manage stock reports, GRN updates, purchase returns, and record keeping.
- Remove expired/damaged medicines as per hospital policy and regulatory norms.
Regulatory Compliance & Safety
- Comply with drug laws and regulations of Pharmacy Council, Drug Control, FDA/DEA norms.
- Maintain records for controlled medications and assist in audits & inspections.
- Adhere to infection control, safety standards, and maintain clean pharmacy premises.
- Ensure proper storage conditions including cold chain management.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and medical data.
Education & Professional Growth
- Keep pharmacological knowledge updated through training, workshops & professional reading.
- Participate in quality initiatives, internal training, and departmental meetings.
- Support pharmacy operational improvements and achieve departmental goals.
Team & Operational Support
- Cooperate with OP/IP staff ensuring smooth workflow and timely medicine availability.
- Assist In-charge Pharmacist in roster duties, record management, and compliance activities.
- Perform any additional tasks assigned by management for operational requirements.
Skills Required
- Knowledge of drug interactions, dosage calculations, and storage standards.
- Familiarity with hospital pharmacy software and billing systems.
- Good communication skills and ability to handle workload efficiently.
- Attention to accuracy, discipline, customer care & documentation.
- Experience handling IP pharmacy workflow & narcotic drug registers.
- Ability to work in emergency situations with quick decision support.
- Multitasking capacity during peak OP rush and IP medicine rounds.
Candidate Requirements:
- D Pharm or B Pharm qualification (valid Kerala State Pharmacy Council registration is mandatory)
- 1-2 years of experience in a hospital OP & IP pharmacy
- Sound knowledge of pharmaceuticals and hospital pharmacy systems
- Good communication skills and attention to detail
- Willingness to work in rotational shifts
