The Global Instrument, Control and Electrical (ICE) Equipment Obsolescence Lead will build and handle a service-provider team to deliver modernization of obsolete instruments, control systems and electrical equipment. The successful candidate will work with bp engineering colleagues to develop, track and deliver plans at our production and refining sites globally.
Let me tell you about the role.
The obsolescence of instrument, control and electrical (ICE) equipment presents an operating risk at any process facility. Business critical equipment obsolescence at bp is handled through a strategic modernization plan, via a proactive, lifecycle-based approach.
The ICE equipment obsolescence risk management programme operates globally and is in the start-up phase, having optimally delivered step change improvements for pilot production assets and refineries over the last 2 years. The bp program for the obsolescence management of ICE equipment has the following objectives:
collect and store equipment and software information for critical instruments, control and electrical equipment,
assess and present and future obsolescence risks for refining and production assets,
work with bp key suppliers to understand and influence their product roadmaps and
develop costed strategic modernization plans to support asset reliability and production uptime targets.
The Global ICE Equipment Obsolescence Lead will expand the program, by building and handling a service-provider team, to deliver sustained global functionality.
The successful candidate will be self-motivated, have a willingness to learn from others and seamlessly work with refining and production assets with minimal direction.
The Global ICE Equipment Obsolescence Lead will work with multiple teams, subject areas, and external resources. These include:
production and refinery ICE teams,
bp domain authorities,
bp TSI service-provider,
digital and cyber security teams,
original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and
engineering service vendors.
What you will deliver
Responsibilities:
focal point for ICE obsolescence in bp Solutions,
implement the roadmap for “Obsolescence through Strategic Modernization” across bp,
develop and maintain evergreen obsolescence plans for regions/refineries,
work closely with regions and refineries to ensure modernization plans are balanced and implemented in line with regional risk profiles,
direct a team that maintains component lifecycle data and develops new methods to gain business insights from our data,
expand the strategic modernization scope into electrical equipment and instrumentation,
handle digital tool use, working with digital program providers,
own the obsolescence roadmap for the 5-year rolling program and ensure integration of cyber security driven obsolescence requirements.

Strong experience in at least one of the following subject area engineering positions:
Instrumentation
Control systems
Electrical systems
Ability to engage and communicate optimally with suppliers
Experience of advising a team of technical specialists.
A good track record in project management and successful delivery
Understanding of contracts and commercial negotiation
Working with colleagues from other subject areas (procurement, quality, project management)
Ability to engage with colleagues and suppliers internationally
Willingness to learn new skills, adapt to change and challenge the norm to ensure engineering value is delivered
Ability to write concise and clear reports and present to senior management.
Good to have experiences/skills (Can be trained for – learning/on-the-job):
Professional Engineer or Chartered Professional Engineer.
Operations and maintenance experience including:
Equipment maintenance strategies
Management of change e.g. modifications,
Operations vulnerability management
Operations risk management.
Ability and confidence to engage with and influence senior leadership on technical matters.
