The Assistant Manager - MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of MEP systems in construction projects. This role ensures that all building services are installed correctly, function efficiently, and meet project specifications and regulatory standards.
Core Responsibilities:
Project Coordination & Planning
Coordinate MEP activities across mechanical (HVAC, firefighting), electrical (power distribution, lighting, low voltage systems), and plumbing (water supply, drainage, sanitary) disciplines
Review and interpret MEP drawings, specifications, and BOQ (Bill of Quantities) to plan installation sequences
Develop detailed work schedules and resource allocation plans in coordination with the project management team
Ensure MEP activities align with overall project timelines and milestones, coordinating with civil and architectural teams to avoid conflicts
Technical Supervision & Execution
Supervise MEP engineers, technicians, and subcontractors during installation, testing, and commissioning phases
Conduct regular site inspections to monitor installation quality, workmanship, and adherence to approved shop drawings
Review and approve method statements, material submittals, and shop drawings before installation
Resolve technical issues and design clashes through coordination with consultants, contractors, and design teams
Oversee installation of systems including chillers, AHUs, pumps, transformers, switchgear, generators, panels, piping networks, ductwork, and cable routing
Quality Assurance & Compliance
Ensure all MEP installations comply with project specifications, local codes, and international standards (ASHRAE, NEC, IEC, BS, local building codes)
Monitor material quality and verify that equipment meets approved specifications and certifications
Oversee testing and commissioning activities including pressure testing, load testing, functional performance tests, and system balancing
Maintain quality documentation including test certificates, as-built drawings, O&M manuals, and inspection records
Resource & Vendor Management
Coordinate with procurement teams for timely delivery of MEP equipment and materials
Manage relationships with MEP subcontractors, equipment suppliers, and specialist vendors
Review subcontractor performance and ensure contractual obligations are met
Track material consumption and equipment installation progress against approved plans
Safety & Risk Management
Enforce safety protocols specific to MEP work including electrical safety, hot work permits, confined space entry, and working at heights
Conduct safety briefings and toolbox talks for MEP teams
Identify potential risks in MEP installation and implement mitigation measures
Ensure proper lockout/tagout procedures during testing and energization
Documentation & Reporting
Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports on MEP activities
Maintain comprehensive project documentation including RFIs (Requests for Information), variation orders, and progress photographs
Update as-built drawings reflecting actual installed conditions
Compile handover documentation including warranties, test reports, certifications, and maintenance manuals
Stakeholder Communication
Liaise with clients, consultants, main contractors, and regulatory authorities regarding MEP matters
Attend project coordination meetings and provide MEP status updates
Support the MEP Manager in client presentations and technical discussions
Coordinate with commissioning agents and facility management teams during handover
Budget & Cost Control
Monitor MEP budgets and track expenditures against approved estimates
Review and recommend approval of subcontractor payment certificates
Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or performance
Assist in preparing variation claims and cost reports
Typical Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering discipline plus 4-8 years of progressive experience in MEP project execution, with strong knowledge of building services systems and construction management principles
