JOB DESCRIPTION – STAFF NURSE
Department: OT / ICU / MICU / Emergency Department

Reports To: Nursing Superintendent
Location: MAGJ Hospital, Mookkannoor
Job Summary
The Staff Nurse is responsible for providing safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to patients in accordance with hospital policies, nursing standards, infection prevention practices, and NABH requirements.
Key Responsibilities1. General Nursing Responsibilities
- Assess patients and provide appropriate nursing care according to their clinical condition.
- Monitor and document vital signs, patient condition, intake/output, and other relevant observations.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician.
- Maintain accurate and timely nursing documentation and patient records.
- Identify and report any deterioration in the patient's condition immediately.
- Ensure proper patient identification and medication safety practices.
- Maintain patient dignity, privacy, confidentiality, and safety.
- Educate patients and their attendants regarding treatment, medication, and discharge instructions.
- Follow hospital infection prevention and control policies.
- Maintain proper hand hygiene and use PPE appropriately.
- Participate in emergency response, code blue, and resuscitation activities.
- Ensure proper handover and takeover of patient care during shift changes.
- Maintain and check nursing equipment, emergency drugs, and supplies.
- Comply with hospital policies, NABH standards, and departmental protocols.
2. OT Staff Nurse – Additional Responsibilities
- Prepare the operation theatre before procedures and ensure readiness of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Assist the surgical team during procedures as a Scrub Nurse or Circulating Nurse.
- Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Perform surgical safety checklist and ensure correct patient, procedure, and site verification.
- Assist with surgical counts of instruments, needles, and swabs.
- Ensure proper handling, labeling, and transfer of specimens.
- Maintain OT records and documentation.
- Assist in postoperative transfer and ensure proper patient handover.
- Follow OT infection control, sterilization, and biomedical waste management protocols.
3. ICU / MICU Staff Nurse – Additional Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients.
- Continuously monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythm, oxygen saturation, and other clinical parameters.
- Manage patients receiving oxygen therapy, ventilatory support, and other critical care interventions as per protocol.
- Assist physicians with procedures and emergency interventions.
- Manage IV lines, central lines, drains, catheters, and other invasive devices as required.
- Administer medications, including high-alert medications, with appropriate safety checks.
- Monitor patients for clinical deterioration and immediately escalate concerns.
- Maintain accurate ICU/MICU charts, nursing notes, fluid balance, and treatment records.
- Participate in CPR, Code Blue, and other emergency resuscitation procedures.
- Ensure proper infection prevention practices, including care of invasive devices.
4. Emergency Department Staff Nurse – Additional Responsibilities
- Perform prompt initial assessment and triage of patients according to clinical priority.
- Provide immediate nursing care to medical and surgical emergencies.
- Assist physicians in emergency procedures and resuscitation.
- Prepare and administer emergency medications as prescribed.
- Maintain readiness of emergency equipment, crash cart, and emergency drugs.
- Assist in trauma management and stabilization of critically ill patients.
- Monitor patients continuously and report any deterioration immediately.
- Ensure timely investigations, procedures, referrals, admissions, and transfers.
- Maintain accurate emergency department documentation and records.
- Participate in Code Blue and other emergency response activities.
Qualifications
- GNM / B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid Nursing Council Registration.
- Additional certification in BLS/ACLS is preferred, particularly for ICU, MICU, OT, and Emergency Department positions.
Experience
- Previous experience in the relevant department is preferred.
- Candidates with experience in OT, ICU, MICU, or Emergency Department will be given preference.
- Freshers may be considered based on departmental requirements and hospital policy.
