Job Summary
The Lab Technician in the Cytogenetics Department is responsible for supporting cytogenetic testing procedures including sample processing, cell culture setup, chromosome preparation, staining, microscopy support, documentation, and laboratory maintenance. The role ensures accurate and timely processing of specimens while maintaining compliance with laboratory quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, label, and process patient samples including blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, chorionic villus samples (CVS), and tissue specimens.
- Perform cell culture setup, harvesting, fixation, slide preparation, and staining procedures for cytogenetic analysis.
- Assist in chromosome banding techniques such as G-banding and other specialized staining methods.
- Maintain proper documentation of laboratory activities, test records, reagent logs, and quality control data.
- Prepare and maintain laboratory reagents, media, and consumables.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment including centrifuges, incubators, microscopes, biosafety cabinets, and imaging systems.
- Support cytogeneticists in karyotyping, FISH preparation, and slide analysis activities.
- Ensure adherence to SOPs, NABL/CAP/CLIA quality standards, and biosafety regulations.
- Monitor inventory levels and coordinate procurement of laboratory supplies.
- Participate in internal quality assurance and proficiency testing programs.
- Dispose of biological waste according to safety guidelines.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory data.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in:
- Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT)
- Biotechnology
- Microbiology
- Genetics
- Life Sciences or related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or certification in Cytogenetics / Molecular Diagnostics.
- Prior experience in a cytogenetics or molecular genetics laboratory.
- Knowledge of karyotyping and FISH techniques is preferred.
Required Skills
- Understanding of laboratory safety and quality practices.
- Basic knowledge of chromosome analysis and cell culture techniques.
- Good microscopy handling skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced diagnostic laboratory.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Familiarity with LIS (Laboratory Information System) is an advantage.
Experience
- Fresher candidates may apply.
- 1–3 years of experience in a cytogenetics or genetics laboratory preferred.
Working Conditions
