ob Summary
The Dialysis Technician is responsible for providing safe, effective, and compassionate dialysis care to patients with acute and chronic kidney diseases. The technician prepares and operates dialysis machines, monitors patients during treatment, maintains infection control standards, ensures proper documentation, and assists the nephrologist and nursing team in delivering quality patient care in accordance with hospital policies and NABH standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesPatient Care
- Prepare patients for hemodialysis treatment as per physician's prescription.
- Assess and record pre-dialysis and post-dialysis vital signs, weight, and general condition.
- Monitor patients continuously during dialysis and promptly report any complications.
- Assist in emergency situations such as hypotension, cardiac arrest, or dialysis-related complications.
- Provide emotional support and educate patients regarding dialysis procedures and post-treatment care.
Dialysis Procedure
- Prepare, prime, and operate dialysis machines before each treatment.
- Connect and disconnect patients from dialysis machines following approved protocols.
- Monitor dialysis parameters including blood flow rate, ultrafiltration, dialysate flow, and treatment duration.
- Ensure proper care of vascular access (AV Fistula, AV Graft, and Central Venous Catheter) as per protocol.
- Perform dialysis procedures only within the approved scope of practice and under supervision where required.
Equipment Management
- Perform routine cleaning, disinfection, and maintenance of dialysis machines.
- Conduct machine safety checks before and after each dialysis session.
- Report equipment malfunction immediately to the Biomedical Engineering Department.
- Ensure proper functioning of the Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment system.
Infection Prevention & Control
- Strictly follow hand hygiene and standard precautions.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Adhere to infection control protocols for dialysis patients, including isolation procedures when required.
- Ensure proper biomedical waste segregation and disposal.
- Maintain a clean and safe dialysis environment.
Documentation
- Record all dialysis treatment details accurately in patient records.
- Document vital signs, treatment parameters, medications administered, and any adverse events.
- Maintain equipment maintenance logs and quality control records.
- Complete all required hospital documentation accurately and on time.
Quality & Safety
- Follow NABH standards, hospital policies, and patient safety protocols.
- Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical meetings.
- Report incidents, adverse events, and near misses through the hospital reporting system.
- Ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
Inventory Management
- Monitor stock levels of dialysis consumables.
- Ensure adequate availability of dialyzers, bloodlines, concentrates, heparin, and emergency supplies.
- Report shortages to the department in-charge.
Training & Development
- Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME), in-service training, and competency assessments.
- Assist in training newly recruited dialysis technicians whenever assigned.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Dialysis Technology (B.Sc. Dialysis Technology / Diploma in Dialysis Technology).
- Registration or certification as per applicable regulatory requirements (if applicable).
