Job Description: Senior GIS Specialist (Environmental & Regulatory Compliance)
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior GIS Specialist to join our environmental consultancy firm. In this role, you will be the cornerstone of our spatial analysis efforts, providing high-precision GIS mapping and data modeling essential for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Forest Clearance (FC), and Wildlife Clearance (WL) applications across India.
The ideal candidate will combine technical proficiency in spatial technologies with a strong understanding of environmental regulatory frameworks and land-use planning.
Key Responsibilities
1. Spatial Analysis for Statutory Clearances: Develop, maintain, and analyze complex GIS datasets for EIA, Forest Clearance, and Wildlife Clearance applications, ensuring strict adherence to MoEF&CC guidelines.
2. Project-Specific Mapping: Create high-quality, submission-ready thematic maps for site-specific projects, including infrastructure development (roads, metro lines), township projects, and coastal development (CRZ).
3. Regulatory Compliance Support: Calculate forest land diversion areas, delineate buffer zones (e.g., mangroves, eco-sensitive zones), and manage spatial overlays for project sites within 10 km of protected areas.
4. Advanced Remote Sensing: Process and interpret satellite imagery (Sentinel, Landsat, High-Res satellite data) to assess land-use/land-cover (LULC) changes, canopy density, and vegetation health.
5. Data Integration & Quality Control: Integrate field-collected data (GPS coordinates, camera trap locations, biodiversity survey data) into standardized GIS databases, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.
6. Collaboration: Work closely with ecological consultants to visualize data patterns and support decision-making in project design and environmental management planning.
Required Technical Skills
1. Software Proficiency: Advanced command of QGIS or ArcGIS Pro is essential. Experience with Google Earth Engine for large-scale analysis is a strong plus.
2. Spatial Analysis & Modeling: Expert knowledge in digitizing, spatial joins, raster-vector conversion, topographical analysis (MAXENT/ LULC /DEM), and projection management.
3. Regulatory Familiarity: Deep understanding of the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP), CRZ Notification zones, and standardized requirements for Forest and Wildlife Division boundary map preparation.
4. Database Management: Ability to manage large spatial datasets and conduct automated workflows to handle complex land-area calculations and overlaps.
Qualifications & Experience
1. Education: Master’s degree in Geoinformatics, GIS, Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, or a related field.
2. Experience: 5+ years of relevant professional experience, preferably in an environmental consultancy or ecological research organization.
3. Communication: Strong ability to document technical processes and translate spatial data into clear visual reports for government submission.
4. Regulatory Acumen: Proven track record in securing environmental/forest clearances through accurate spatial reporting is highly desirable.
