Overview:
Introduction
The waters_connect portfolio within Waters Informatics is seeking a creative and technically strong Senior Research Engineer in Machine Learning to help advance intelligent, automated scientific workflows. This role focuses on applying machine learning and AI techniques to improve how analytical data is generated, interpreted, and acted upon across connected laboratory systems.
The successful candidate will work within the Informatics portfolio, collaborating closely with the Global Research team on early‑stage research and prototyping. Together, you will help develop next‑generation capabilities that enable more autonomous, efficient, and robust chromatographic and mass spectrometric workflows, including data‑driven optimization and expert AI assistance.

Experiment with various LLM, agentic AI, machine learning and statistical models, develop data features, generate metrics, and evaluate results associated with the collection and analysis of chromatographic and mass spectrometric data

Work with subject matter experts (SMEs) to evaluate models and present results to stakeholders, demonstrating the value of the ML techniques in new product concepts

Use object-oriented programming and functional programming best practices to maintain codebases and write unit tests

Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, patent applications, and transferable protocols

Contribute to the construction and maintenance of data pipelines supporting research and applied informatics use cases
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of advances in machine learning and AI
Qualifications:

Master's in computer science, data science or related field and at least 5-6 years’ relevant work experience, or a PhD and at least one year of experience. Position level commensurate with experience

Experience in model development using Python for machine learning, statistical, and/or mechanistic models

Experience implementing LLM and/or agentic AI solutions using RAG and fine-tuning

Robust programming skills in Python (e.g., numpy, pandas or pySpark, scipy, scikit-learn)
- Comfortable with Git version control, BASH, or command prompt.

Comfortable discovering and driving new modelling techniques and best practices from papers, textbooks, and other technical documentation

Able to communicate results using meaningful metrics and visualisations to managers and stakeholders, and receive feedback.
- Knowledge of an object-oriented or functional programming language, such as Java, C#, Scala, is desirable

Familiarity with signal‑processing methods is desirable
