The Special Purpose Machine Automation Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and improving custom automation equipment and special-purpose machines. The role includes concept development, 3D modeling, engineering calculations, manufacturing support, assembly guidance, testing, and customer interaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Design special-purpose machines and industrial automation systems based on customer requirements.
- Develop machine concepts, layouts, and detailed mechanical designs.
- Create 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings using CAD software such as SolidWorks & Autocad.
- Select mechanical components including:
- Pneumatic systems
- Servo motors
- Linear guides
- Ball screws
- Gearboxes
- Bearings
- Sensors
- Actuators
- Perform engineering calculations for strength, motion, and cycle time.
- Coordinate with electrical, controls, PLC, robotics, and manufacturing teams.
- Prepare Bill of Materials (BOM) and engineering documentation.
- Support fabrication, assembly, machine trials, and commissioning.
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues during machine build and installation.
- Implement design improvements to optimize machine performance, safety, and cost.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
- Provide technical support to customers and production teams.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 0-2 years of experience in SPM or industrial automation machine design.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles.
- Experience with CAD software such as:
- SolidWorks
- AutoCAD
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, and assembly.
- Familiarity with pneumatics, hydraulics, motion control, and robotics.
- Understanding of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
- Experience preparing BOMs and design documentation.
