Job Summary
The ICU Staff Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill patients requiring continuous monitoring and advanced life support. The nurse is responsible for patient assessment, administration of medications, operation of critical care equipment, assisting in emergency procedures, maintaining accurate documentation, and ensuring patient safety in accordance with hospital policies and NABH standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesPatient Care
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients.
- Perform continuous assessment and monitoring of patient condition.
- Monitor and record vital signs, ECG, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, respiratory status, neurological status, and urine output.
- Identify early signs of patient deterioration and immediately inform the treating doctor.
- Develop and implement individualized nursing care plans.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation and hourly observation charts.
Medication Administration
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and injections as prescribed.
- Calculate and administer critical care drug infusions accurately.
- Monitor patients for medication effectiveness and adverse reactions.
- Maintain medication safety and adhere to the "Five Rights" of medication administration.
Critical Care Procedures
- Assist physicians during:
- Endotracheal intubation
- Central venous catheter insertion
- Arterial line insertion
- Chest tube insertion
- Tracheostomy care
- Lumbar puncture and other bedside procedures
- Perform suctioning and airway management.
- Provide ventilator care and monitor ventilated patients.
- Assist in weaning patients from ventilators.
Equipment Management
- Operate and monitor:
- Mechanical Ventilators
- Cardiac Monitors
- Defibrillators
- Syringe Pumps
- Infusion Pumps
- BiPAP/CPAP Machines
- Oxygen Delivery Systems
- Ensure all ICU equipment is functional and report faults promptly.
Emergency Response
- Respond immediately to medical emergencies.
- Participate actively in Code Blue and resuscitation teams.
- Perform CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as trained.
- Prepare emergency drugs and equipment for critical procedures.
Infection Control
- Follow strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Adhere to hand hygiene and infection prevention protocols.
- Ensure proper biomedical waste segregation and disposal.
- Prevent hospital-acquired infections through compliance with ICU infection control guidelines.
Patient & Family Support
- Communicate patient status appropriately to the treating team.
- Educate and support patients' families regarding ICU care and hospital policies.
- Maintain patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
Documentation
- Maintain accurate ICU nursing records.
- Document medication administration, procedures, and nursing interventions.
- Complete shift handover reports accurately.
- Report clinical incidents as per hospital policy.
Qualifications
- B.Sc. Nursing or GNM
- Valid Tamil Nadu Nursing Council Registration
- BLS Certification (Mandatory)
- ACLS Certification (Preferred)
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience preferred.
- Freshers may be considered after ICU training, based on hospital policy.

Pay: ₹8,086.00 - ₹45,020.82 per month
