Job Title: Senior Design Engineer (Fabrication Industry)

Reporting To: Additional Director
Job Summary
The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing fabricated structures and components as per customer requirements and industry standards. The role includes leading design projects, coordinating with production, and ensuring manufacturability, cost efficiency, and quality compliance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design & Development
- Develop 2D drawings and 3D models for fabricated components and assemblies
- Design structures such as trailers, chassis, frames, and heavy equipment
- Ensure designs meet functional, safety, and regulatory requirements
- Prepare Bill of Materials (BOM)
2. Engineering Analysis
- Perform design calculations (strength, load, stress analysis)
- Conduct or support FEA (Finite Element Analysis)
- Validate design feasibility for fabrication and assembly
3. Fabrication & Manufacturing Coordination
- Ensure Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
- Coordinate with production, quality, and purchase teams
- Provide technical support during fabrication and troubleshooting
4. Drawing & Documentation
- Prepare and review:
- GA (General Arrangement) drawings
- Detail fabrication drawings
- Welding details and symbols
- Maintain revision control and documentation standards
5. Customer & Project Handling
- Understand customer requirements and specifications
- Participate in design discussions and approvals with clients
- Support project execution with timely design deliverables
6. Standards & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Industry standards (ISO, IS, ASME, etc.)
- Welding standards and practices
- Maintain design records as per ISO 9001 system
7. Team Leadership & Mentoring
- Guide junior design engineers and draftsmen
- Review designs and ensure quality of output
- Allocate tasks and monitor progress
8. Continuous Improvement
- Suggest improvements in design for:
- Cost reduction
- Weight optimization
- Process efficiency
- Implement standardization and modular design concepts
Required Qualifications
- BE / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
Experience
- 7–10 years in fabrication / heavy engineering / trailer manufacturing / structural design
- Hands-on experience in welded structures and sheet metal fabrication
Key Skills
- Strong knowledge of fabrication processes (cutting, bending, welding)
- Expertise in engineering drawings & GD&T
- Knowledge of materials (MS, SS, high-strength steel)
- Good understanding of load calculations and structural behavior
- Problem-solving and analytical skills
Software Skills
- AutoCAD (2D drafting)
- SolidWorks / Creo / Inventor (3D modeling)
- FEA tools (ANSYS or similar – preferred)
- MS Excel / ERP systems
KPIs (Performance Indicators)
- On-time design delivery
- Design accuracy (minimum rework/revisions)
- Cost optimization achieved
- Customer approval rate
- Reduction in design-related production issues
Additional Requirements
- Strong coordination and communication skills
- Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple projects
- Site/shop floor exposure preferred
