The emergency/ casualty doctor should be capable in Emergency Medicine (EM) which is the medical specialty dedicated to the immediate evaluation, diagnosis, and stabilization of patients with acute illnesses or injuries requiring urgent medical attention
Core Responsibilities:
The primary goal in the emergency department (ED) is stabilization—preventing further deterioration until a patient can be safely discharged or admitted to a specialized ward.
- Triage: Prioritizing patients based on the severity of their condition (e.g., life-threatening vs. minor) to ensure those in critical need are treated first.
- Rapid Assessment: Performing physical exams and ordering urgent diagnostic tests like ECGs, CT scans, and blood work to identify acute threats.
- Resuscitation: Initiating life-saving measures such as CPR, defibrillation, and advanced airway management for patients in cardiac or respiratory arrest.
- Stabilization: Managing acute conditions like trauma, sepsis, stroke, and severe allergic reactions.
- Coordination: Working within multidisciplinary teams (doctors, nurses, paramedics) and communicating with specialists for follow-up care.
Common Qualifications: EM Physician Lead diagnostic and treatment decisions; perform advanced surgical/medical procedures.MD/DO/MBBS, Board Certification in EM.
